Famous people who also raced boats

I saw Guy Lombardo race at Myers's Lake, Canton, Ohio in the early 60's. He drove a borrowed DSH, but I think he raced an inboard of his own regularly, for a while. I think the boat was a Swift or a Marchetti. I'll bet some of the old time Three Rivers folks remember!? He was ALL dressed up but he put on one of those old cotton stuffed lifejackets and 1/2 shell helmets anyway and raced.

      In addition....

Johnny Cash's bass guitar player, named Marshall Grant, was a very prominant team owner of Alky racing boats in the early 1960's. I have several photos of him at Lakeland, and somewhere there's a pic of him holding me when I was about 4 years old. All his boats were named after Johnny Cash songs, the one that sticks out was a C Alky Runabout named "Ring Of Fire", with a burning ring at the nose.

In addition, the famous Astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom also raced inboards (I think), he was one of the original "Right Stuff" seven astronauts, and was killed in the infamous Apollo I fire in 1967.

I know this is a kneeler thread, but I have more. In addition to Marshall Grant of the Cash band racing, there was his drummer as well. W.S. "Fluke" Holland raced OPC. He was racing a Kitson and knew my dad through Marshall. My dad built him a tunnel to run his Twister on. Later, he was expecting to get a new OMC V6 so my dad built a larger version of the same boat. OMC didnt build the V6 till later and delivered a V4 instead. The boat was just a little too big for the V4.

On at least one occaision, both W.S. and Marshall would stop at the shop if they were passing thru with time to spare. As a little kid, I never knew these were such famous people at our little shop in the back yard.

On another note I was reading about the Miss Madison history at www.madisonregatta.com In 1964, Eddie Sachs had taken a test drive in one of the unlimiteds.Unfortunatly, he was killed at Indy that same year.

While talking to my dad today, he mentioned that the artist, Andrew Wyeth, his brother Jaime and their father were outboarders at one time.

I remember getting a copy of this photo of Roy Rogers from a Mercury dealer in Tulsa when I was about 4-5... The best of both worlds!

The Singing Cowboy raced mostly OPC type races, I don't know if he actually raced DU. The picture was taken as a publicity photo one day he was visiting a Merc facility.

It was a movie for cry-not-loud! Not real life.
