  • Famous people who raced Stock/Mod/Pro?

The Johnny Cash thread I find amazing! That picture is just great of him sitting on the boat!

Who else is there that the general public might know that ran at the Stock/Mod/Pro level of outboards? I think there are a couple connected to NASCAR and I remember hearing about someone in football... provide a link if you can for fun. I'll try to keep it updated for a bit...

      Coach

I seem to recall the Craig T Nelson ("Coach" from TV show of the same name) ran D Stock Hydro.

Also, Robert Stack ("The Untouchables") raced inboards in the 50's.

And out here, Tommy Burleson, former NC basketball player and Center for the Seattle Supersonics in the Bill Russell era, raced 6 litre inboard. You shoulda seen it....he was so tall he looked like he was STANDING in the boat!

        Celebrity racers......

I don't know if he ever got involved, but back in the late 60's, Peter Graves from Mission Impossible spent the day with us testing in Cape Coral, FL. He was helping start the boats, lifting them in and out, and having a great time talking to my Dad about the different classes and their performance. I'm pretty sure he never raced, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was an owner at one time or another. He arrived at Lake Kennedy in a limo and left in a limo. Life is good............

I'm sure there are many over the years in the bigger divisions and dozens in offshore. Don Jonston, that karrati guy (name slips my mind at the moment), Guy Lombardo, and many more. And also racers who moved to the bigger divisions that are famous drivers in thos divisions. And they certainly deserve credit, but in this case I mean drivers who a person outside of knowing boat racing at all might have heard of that at one time raced with us little folk... haha.

              Chip...........

I recently saw the movie 'Madison' and in one of the interviews with the star of the movie, he mentioned something about the death of Chip Hanauer. Chip is still around, isn't he? I'm sure I would have heard about that passing. If anyone has a DVD copy, go to bonus featurette and see if you hear it too.

How about Johnn Cash? looks like a 2 cylinder mod?

What years were these people involved?

I heard that when Chip saw that, he commented, "What??? I died???? How come nobody bothered to tell me?????"

                  He is alive and well.

Frank Cicci raced ASR, he w/the uncle of the Sabin Bros. They were originally from the Horseheads, NY area.

Andy Cocker- Florida native who raced D&CSH then went on to Unlimiteds. Pitted next to him @ the 1981 Dayton Nationals.

                          More guys........

Andy Coker was a VERY competetive stock driver. He went on to smaller inboard classes and never lost his will to win. I have no idea what he is doing now, but I'm pretty sure he is a success. I have raced against Andy and can tell you he is one of the best.

Kevin Hatcher (retired NHL hockey player) and his younger brother Derian (Philadelphia Flyers NHL) are involved in offshore racing. Thye grew up in the Detroit area and absolutley looove boat racing. Every year we meet them downtown Detroit for the Gold Cup. Kevin even got to go for a spin in Jim Harveys Ulimited ( Miss Trendwest at the time i believe.) Kevins son Cole went for a ride in our J hydro, very interesting.
but yeah just thought id add these 2

I was over at Andys about a year and a half ago near West Palm. He builds go cart engines and last I heard was suposed to get into the Nas Car truck series but could have changed by now. He has a den with alot of race memories in it mostly from his Inboard Days.
