Mr Cash performed at one of the NOA North vs South races at Knoxville Tenn in the mid 60s. At that time Billy Seebold was driving for Marshall Grant. Later on Dickie Pond became his driver.

I believe that the first driver Marshall had was Dicky Pond , he was out of Keoka Iowa, and at the time I saw them they were running Quincy Flatheads, and were super fast then.Chris Johnson and Mark should remember this as their father was real tight with Marshall at one time
My Grandpa had a picture somewhere of him and Johnny Cash sitting on the tail gate of a truck in Alexandria , a long time ago when my Grandpa was still racing . If I find it , I will post it up .
i remember someone telling me this at constantine. if i remember correctly, he said he was really big into racing...i think he even said he wrote a song or two about it...really loved racing though...haha now i know me and johnny cash had something in common, cuz i defenitly have NO musical talents
Dick Pond who I know very well was the frist driver of the Ring of Fire runabout. Dick drove for Marshall from around 1962 until 1967 or 68. During this time Dick won 5 world titles, held 3 straight away records and won the North-South NOA championship twice. After Dick left Billy Seebold took over the driving for Marshall, when Billy left to drive tunnel boats Dan Kirts took over the driving dutys. I have a 44 c.i. Quincy-Merc mounted on one of Marshall's fuel tank tower housings. Dick and I would like to find one of the old boats to restore, if anyone knows there where abouts please shoot me an e-mail at nneadeck@adams.net
...the afore mentioned boat is indeed in storage in Fishers Landing ,NY.I took hull numbers to Ralph DeSilva who verified authenticity.Several DeSilvas out there are represented as Ring of Fire boats...Ralph has the records and can tell you about the very few that are the real deal.
Our family was discussing Marshall Grant and Johnny Cash, when my Mom told us a small story I never heard before. Sometime around 1963 or 1964 Johnny Cash played here in Greensboro. Marshall Grant got tickets and backstage passes for my Mom and Dad (Randy Johnson) being Dad and Marshall were friends. After the show Marshall found my folks and said "Come with me". He took them around to the rear of the Coliseum where Marshall introduced them to Johnny (and June Carter as well).
That last post just proves a point to me, that the theory of six degrees of separation is true.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
"Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called Chains."
Although I don't remember meeting Randy Johnson, I'm pretty sure we were at some of the same Region 4 races back in the mid 1970's.
So pick an Augustine, any Augustine, and start tracking:
Augustine, Randy Johnson, Marshall Grant, Johnny Cash... and then imagine the celebrities, politicians, and regular folks that Johnny Cash met in his lifetime >>and then << all the people who met the people Johnny met in his lifetime.
