This class Originally had the weight in it, we simply went back to the original rule, the NO Weight was the change a few years back. Heavier is safer I agree too. It is also more affordable to run the wooden boats and considerably less expensive than the carbon fiber boats. Lets stop beaten around the bush more expensive isn't very attractive to most people that's why the sport isn't growing like everyone would like to see. Make it more economical to compete and "They will come".

Maybe what the problem is that we don't have any NBRA races in the northeast. I'm all for less expenses to put on a race. I love the fact that the NBRA has worked as hard as they have to grow the sport, receive financial backing from private businesses and at times be able to supply TOW MONEY to participants of there races. The Large Runabout classes are 8-12 boats strong. I'm all for minimum weights too. How can we get a NBRA race in our neck of the woods?

I follow threads like this with keen interest since I'm to be a regional mod commissioner and I would like to figure out what will revitalize mod classes. It seems most of the destructive mod controversy stems from the elusive belief that rules will somehow level the playing field or that rules can protect me from myself. I say balderdash to both notions so far. Mods are for the tinkerers and mad scientists among us. The argument that a minimum weight will add a new level of "fairness" to D Mod R,or any other class is faulty thinking. I have a very light carbon fiber boat for 850 H which is a good thing since I have never had a superior motor. If you make everyone answer the green flag at close to identical weight, you might as well start agonizing about how to equalize motors.....which brings you right back to the spirit of the stock division, not mod ! Guys the most important goal for stock and mod racing should be increasing participation instead of trying to give everyone a chance to win. In case you haven't noticed, there some guys who could strap a motor to a bath tub and run up front. There are a lot of guys who could be given Bob Dunlop's boat and still be stuck in the pack. Also, assuming that heavier is safer makes little sense. Guys will still find ways to reduce wetted surface and they will have the same mishaps. Incidentally, science says only that light boats accelerate faster. All things considered, I think it is sad that only 850 remains unfettered with a minimum weight.
