  • carbon fiber questions......

what is the "prefered" type of carbon fiber used on say cockpit sides, dash, etc? What type, bi-direction or uni-directional? What weight: oz/sq yd?

use a double bias cloth (+-45degree) or turn your regular cloth (0/90degree) 45degrees. a 10oz cloth would provide good protection. apply cloth to both sides of each coaming side. use an epoxy resin.

      Matt,

What is your opinion of the carbon fiber / kevlar weaves?

I always thought growing up would be cool, I was wrong!
The other day GG laughed at me because I take more pills a day than she does....

there are to different types of the kevlar/carbon hybrids. one type has the kevlar running in one direction and carbon in the other direction. the other type has the kevlar and carbon running in both directions. the hybrids are more than just for looks, the carbon actually helps hold the kevlar together since kevlar does not bond well with resins.

I avoid using kevlar in my boats for only one reason, kevlar gets all fuzzy when you cut or sand it, making it difficult to finish edges or make repairs. save the kevlar for driving suits, prop gloves and bullet proof vests. spectra has very similar problems as kevlar.
