  • Lake Buhlow - Pineville, LA (for the long time racers)

Monday I stopped by Lake Buhlow in Pineville, LA (Alexandria to a lot of people) on my way back from New Orleans to see what all the construction of the new bridge has changed. I've been going to Lake Buhlow since the mid '70's. That was my favorite place to race. One mile course and plenty of room for milling and making a long run to the start. Plenty of good pit area.

Some room was lost up on top of the hill due to widening of road and lost a little pit area at the west end (couldn't get pictures of that). They filled in some of the "arm" that ran south towards the road on the west end of the pits. The area where the sheds were up on top of the hill has been taken by the road. Still possible to hold boat races there. It just doesn't look the same anymore. Kind of like when they cut down the willow trees that used to be on the shoreline.

Well. I'll miss all the grass on the east end, but the barn is still there and Carl Rylee's pavillion with shed roof is still there. What more could you ask? I would imagine there is still plenty of acerage on which to park trailers and cars.

Alan, I've sent you a private message concerning spark plug boots. Also do you need any special permission to test at Lk Buhlow. Jack

Thanks for the photos David. Still looks good to race there to me from photos. I vote to race there in April and all commit to go eat at Tunk's each night for their support of the races. Alex/Pineville is the best place to race!!!!

                        Looks Good

It is always sad to see those little things we remember go away from a favorite race course, such as those willow trees. In viewing the pics, it looks like the spot where I pitted a few times now looks like a marsh ? Used to be green grass. Might be again once they finish up construction ?

Lots of Boat Racing history in that park and water. I am hoping many, many more historical days can be made there.

Rick, we need a photographer to phots us all at Tunks, that is now the most historical boat race restaurant I know of ! Well, maybe we need to limit the photos to prior of, lets say 9:00 PM.... LOL

Darrell--The Tunk's race in Alexandria La will be May 17-18th. The race is actually at a lake right at the Tunk's restaurant and not at Lake Buhlow. Come and down and bring those Runabouts,, would love to have your all.
