    ply glue

Agreed, the weakest link is always where failure happens. The glue I am familiar with used in the plys is the resorsonil type (2 part nasty stuff) that is WBP and is an extremly strong bond. If used for frame and ply construction it stains surrounding wood and difficult to clean up so clear finishes are out in those areas. Not a stain issue with the urea resin types (Weldwood plastic resin water mixed) as water clean up before setting.

Not sure what glue type they presently use in okume BS1088 plywood but it is WBP and when I boiled for at least an hour does not come apart.

        Glues

Ed Karelson, who designed the J boats now being built, used Weldwood glue building unlimiteds and inboards for years.....some of which are still around and seem to be holding up just fine.

Great project. I wish we had a D hydro build so I could make a new boat!

          Merry Christmas,

I started using epoxy glue when I moved to Chowchilla in 1980. Before that is was the Welwood glue. What I noticed was in repairing boats that were built with the welwood glue is the glue dried to a power in hot dry climate. It works well up north, but not down here in dry California. This is a problem in DeSilva, Z Craft. I restored a Lauterbach, I had to take the whole boat apart since all the glue had dried to a power. I think I spent more time on it than Henry did building it.
Building J Hydros in Seattle where the sun seldom shines, Welwood glue is just fine.

I have a 1982 Karelsen 25ssh pickle hydro Ed designed/built using Weldwood, it still has solid glue joints. It was actively raced up northeast then in the south I presently use it with a 25ss and a Y80.

Week 3: Sponson battens, fairing, internal hardware and Non Trips

On our third week of construction, we added the sponson battens, glued and clamped into place, and skinned the afterplanes to our 5 new J Hydros.

Then we turned the boats over, faired the deck battens and frames in preparation for decks. We also added the hardware that's best to mount when the decks are not on the boat yet (bow eyes, T-nuts for transom handles, etc).

Next week, we will skin and fair the sponsons....then varnish all boat bottoms on the outside. We'll call the construction complete on the below-the-waterline side.

At this rate, we estimate 2-3 more weeks of build before our new racers can take their boats home with them.

Finally--a big Shout Out to John Peeters and the good folks at Penway Media, who were kind enough to present each builder with a gift certificate for free vinyl numbers, boat names and driver names for each new hull. How cool is that?

Not bad for a project that started 3 weeks ago, working on it one day a week.....

For us way east, it would be nice if you would identify some of or all of the people
in these photos... You could call out the names and what color of shirt,,, vest,
hat or stocking hat for each person that you want to identify..
                      Just curious...
