Haven't you just described the USTS?
As for crowds of amateur e-gamers watching professional e-gamers, maybe this could fall under a Gresham's Law of Sport in which the sports requiring the least effort will prevail over the ones that require, for example, many hours of practice on the ballfield, or in the ring, or the ice rink, or the gym, or (motorsports) in the shop/basement/etc.. I have never understood (especially after trying it a few times) the appeal to so many of the "sport" of golf except as this version of Gresham's Law applies, amateur golf requiring no preparation, no time in the gym, etc..
(Even less do I understand why there is enough money for professional golf to exist at all, much less to be televised (sponsored by serious amounts of money). Why are there golf spectators, who travel to watch others play golf. What can they see, how can they detect a half-millimeter difference in grip or stroke that turns a bogey into a birdie? Beats me!!)
But choosing the easy, low effort avocation seems to be ever more common. Look at "air-guitar." People used to actually learn to play real guitars! Now not only are individuals who actively, physically FANTASIZE that they have learned to play NOT laughed out of the room, no, there are public events in which contestants compete at this fantasy!! The mind boggles.
I remember a couple of years ago when the armchair critics were grumping about how Steve Irwin, "the crocodile hunter," had been killed by the stingray because he was "stupid" in tempting fate one time too many. "Stupid"?? Steve Irwin lived his life going flat-out. Steve Irwin never played air-guitar or air-golf or air-anything. He was the real thing, and died with the throttle wide-open. Compared with a Steve Irwin (or a Dan Kirts or a John Myers or a Howard Anderson or a Tom O'Neill) the e-gamers know nothing about living. Let 'em gather in their thousands to watch others play their "virtual" (meaning, non-) sport; those people certainly aren't worth anyone's envy.Last edited by Smitty; 11-07-2013, 12:37 PM.

Effective immediately the following classes are now available for racing in the US no other classes will be honored at this time.
OSY400 - Hydro - Runabout
F125 - Hydro - Runabout
F175 - Hydro - Runabout
F250 - Hydro - Runabout
F350 - Hydro - Runabout
F500 - Hydro - Runabout - Capsule
12 heats of racing back to back, no Stock Outboard Division, No Mod Division and no Pro Division. Its the American Powerboat Association Hydroplane - Runabout Series for North American.
* If a class does not have 12 boats its deleted from the weekend line up.
*There is no real speed difference from a top notch pro ASH outfit to a top notch CSH to a DSH outfit on a oval course. Racing is racing there are no slow classes for people who want to joy ride. Cant get 12 boats then stay home and save your money for the next race where you know 12 will show up.
Disclaimer, 12 might be a bit high in today's climate, 8 boat mandatory rule or no race.

Powers That Be ?
In order that the masses themselves may not guess what they are about WE FURTHER DISTRACT THEM WITH AMUSEMENTS, GAMES, PASTIMES, PASSIONS, PEOPLE'S PALACES... SOON WE SHALL BEGIN THROUGH THE PRESS TO PROPOSE COMPETITIONS IN ART, IN SPORT OF ALL KINDS: these interests will finally distract their minds from questions in which we should find ourselves compelled to oppose them. Growing more and more disaccustomed to reflect and form any opinions of their own, people will begin to talk in the same tone as we, because we alone shall be offering them new directions for thought . . . of course through such persons as will not be suspected of solidarity with us." (Protocol 13)
He who controls when the cameras start, roll & stop controls the projected imagery that most people are repetitiously exposed to, which then controls the perception that most people exhibit and/or parrot.

Cybertainment Is Taking Over
Back about 20 years ago, there used to be a super good patriot radio broadcast by a guy in FL. It became, at one point, the biggest private, grass roots media on the radio. The thing I used to like about the show the most was that they had some extremely intelligent PHD types on as guests, ranging from the far left to the far right in political thought & knowledge.
What I specifically remember is a guest from a significant California think-tank college, and what he predicted back then has come to reality at an alarming rate in the last 5 years. He said back then that in the future the powers that be want the youth (and then later the adults) to be totally content and satisfied with cybertainment without the physical combination that most of us are accustomed to, ie think about it, learn about it, build it, perfect it, perform it, improve it and progress it.
Now it's all primarily virtual. When you really think about it, even what we experienced and were accustomed to in our traditions and history, what it ultimately boils down to is the science of mind over matter.
They want us all entertained, contained and wage slaves for them. It was a plan that seems to be working well.
Spontaneous and random?? Yeah, right......
Regards,
Paul

Build J boats
SOA has been doing the HARM J hydro project for almost 10 years. We have been growing Junior hydro numbers in our region, which in turn have led to increased sizes in our yamato classes now. We had a lull of about 4 years where, it was real hard to get interest. THEN 2013 HAPPENED! 3 Junior hydro's started the year in Castle Rock, WA in May, by Sept at Yelm there were 11. Stock outboard racers schools are great, but to actually get a new generation of kids into the sport they need boats to run. Getting a parent and child together to build a boat has worked out really well in our region, with now Ed karelson getting invovled to build the kit boats. The slew of J racers in our region are now on an upswing and that's what APBA, et al need to do nationally. This type of program can get kids into racing through a building project that is pretty cool. You get a kid and his friend, even better, then it's not the 'wasted saturday with dad.'
I am a firm believer the only way to really build boat racing is through this type of project. Getting new 40 year old drivers is awesome too, but getting a 12 year old is even better (the hope is they'll be a new lifer). That's what is going to make boat racing grow, even with video games, etc to 'compete with.
I had video games, baseball, football, basketball, boy scouts, and boat racing. And which one am I stil activily doing 19 years later.....you get them to love the sport early and it will work.Kyle Bahl
