Not a chance in hell Pat, the tide has turn and the window of opportunity for powerboat racing to become main stream sport has come and gone. These are young generation X fresh minds with the ability to raise money through kickstarter and Crowdfunding.

The young minds making this empire would run circle around the old grey haired white men who call them self's businessmen.

This is the future Pat, the guys who start these mini empires are in their 20's this aint your Fathers Oldsmobile :-)

I watched this piece also, crazy. I am 42 and realize that I am becoming more and more out of touch with youth.

What struck me is that they have an "on line" viewing audience of 20Milllion! That would be a good TV share.

Interesting to see where kids minds and market share are at.

It is not that I am not aware of the Gamming society. quite the opposite, one of my sons has been traveling all over new England for years going to these competitions--just saying that the Media took it from the living room to the public eye either thru the net or mass media TV. That is what has been lacking as we do not Promote as APBA's Purpose is stated in the By Laws.

But to completely write Boat Racing off as a total failure is not in my nature.

The sad thing is that most of the Gamers only play these games very few play any type of physical sports--my son and several of his friends play all the time I mean every day. One son built a incredible room in his home that has 3 50 inch flat screen TVs. and many different types of game machines.

There always has been and there always will be more NERDS than Jocks
and boat racers are jocks.
The one son (I have 4) raced j then csh Yamato flipped the csh and has never been in a boat since. He is the Gamer.

Another son still races and has flipped several times both in 500 runabout and 1100 capsule hydro he is the racer.

So one risks his life and the other has blisters on his fingers lololo

This is no different than any other sport. Anyone can buy a video game and partake. Just like anyone can buy a basketball, go to the park and shoot hoops. The best will rise to the top and compete nationally and maybe even worldwide. The rest of us will be hobbyists.

The best way to grow the sport of outboard racing is to get people in boats through driver’s schools. It’s the safest and most reliable way to do it. It’s been proven time and time again. There is no other feeling like driving an outboard race boat. Gaming is just another avenue for people to spend their time and money at. More choices equal a tougher sell for attracting new racers. No different than within our own sport. To many classes of watered down fields. We should have an updated format but not many are willing to change for the betterment of the sport, unfortunately.

The pimple-faced kids will never know the exhilaration of going into the first turn with 11 other boats or making a LeMans start with 20 other boats. I cannot imagine an on-line game that would make my heart pound like the LeMans start of World Championships in 2008.

In no way knocking a successful business venture and love the spirit of a young business people.

Boat racing perhaps should tap into this energy and enthusiasm.

My first day of being CEO/President of the APBA would go as follows:

Effective immediately the following classes are now available for racing in the US no other classes will be honored at this time.

OSY400 - Hydro - Runabout

F125 - Hydro - Runabout

F175 - Hydro - Runabout

F250 - Hydro - Runabout

F350 - Hydro - Runabout

F500 - Hydro - Runabout - Capsule


12 heats of racing back to back, no Stock Outboard Division, No Mod Division and no Pro Division. Its the American Powerboat Association Hydroplane - Runabout Series for North American.

* If a class does not have 12 boats its deleted from the weekend line up.

*There is no real speed difference from a top notch pro ASH outfit to a top notch CSH to a DSH outfit on a oval course. Racing is racing there are no slow classes for people who want to joy ride. Cant get 12 boats then stay home and save your money for the next race where you know 12 will show up.

Disclaimer, 12 might be a bit high in today's climate, 8 boat mandatory rule or no race.
