Ok I now have to chime in on all this, Before anything gets way out of hand, 1st of all let me tell you guys I have been with the NBRA since it began , also I have been a officer VP or president of the NBRA for a total of 8 years and am the current pres. I must say It has ben a true Honor to represent this orginazation, When I went out to the Nationals that were ran n Omaha Ne. many years ago, most of the racers truly believied that I was full of crap, But I had a vision for boat racing, and this was to bring boat racing back into the spotlight of some sorts and to be able to get sponsors to subsidize the cost of putting on a boat race, and have some prize and tow money for the boat racers, this goal of mine has never waivered, and a small portion of my goal has been achieved. We have had many races over the years , with Thousands in prize and tow, several races I have seen racers win and take home over $1000 each(yes that is 1 thousand each) in prize and tow. and several at each race win several hundred. But all this is due to 1 thing and 1 thing only , and that is determination, All of the NBRA drivers are now Determined that what we are doing is what is needed in this sport, And guys do realize that The NBRA is made of all volunteers , all but our executive director , that is the only paid position in the NBRA. as far as our insurance goes, we carry 2 million in lialibility and 3,000 in medical, out insurance has no aggregats and does have participant to participant coverage. and it is K&K written by Hawk Race. and 1 of the reasons that we have been able to keep costs low to the clubs, is we have not had a ton of loss claims, ( falling out of you camper while your drunk at a race weekend, and going to get stitches, does not constitute filing a medical claim with the insurance) and I heard that this has actually happened with another group.
The NBRA supports the Clubs that host and run the races, We have fewer classes in our structure, that believe it or not does run all of the engines that APBA run, make a day much shorter, as a fact I have seen 14 classes of boats run 2 heats each, in a matter of 3 hrs, 28 heats of racing in3 hrs or less. (Jack Stotts refereed this).
NBRA is growing. WE have Mods our sister Club, USTS run the pro or( alky burners). together in 2013, the NBRA was flush so we rebated each club that put on a race a minimum of $500 , NBRA , non profit, so we give it away LOL., the whole point here is that myself, and the NBRA commission is working in the same direction, to do what ever we can to ensure that the future of what we do is secure and grow what we have. not to be self serving but to work together as a team to better the sport. with the core of people that are within the NBRA many new goals have been brought into view, and with there help these too will be achievied.

OK, figured I haven't chimed in a while, so wanted to point out. I don't care if I race with NBRA or APBA. If there is a race that I can run, I would be there. I look at this from outside the box, it's like airlines. You have a choice, Delta or United. Both have planes, both get you to point B, and one may cheaper than the other. It's schedule.

When it comes to tow and prize money, I entered this sport after beating cancer. I haven't won a race yet. I don't care if I ever win a race (well yes I do, my son reminds me every other day, he took 1st at his first J runabout race) but I go to the races for the sportsmanship attitude, the commodity, the excitement of the start, and yes sometimes the agony of defeat. The sport has pulled my father out of retirement (last raced in the 50's) and pulled my immediate family closer.
Sure, there is a cost, but this is my vacation in the summer, my escape from work. If there was tow money, or cash for winning, I would take the same stance I did with loaning my motor to Brewster for the nationals. If you win, donate the money back to the organization to strengthen it.
That being said, let's not finger point at which is better NBRA, or APBA. Just get out there, have fun, be safe, and support your local club.
I'll climb off the soap box now.
When it comes to boat racing and the wife, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission, and of course I spent a number of nights sleeping on the couch!

Good Points. The comradderie is present in both organizations. The major difference bewtween the two, in my opinion, is cost. Insurance coverage is close to same, we race the same style boats and engines (kneelers), both org's like beer. Both org's have folks who do 80% of the work.

I have been involved with NBRA in some shape of form since they were formed. I have been involved with APBA since the 70's. It's only the last couple years that I did not renew membership in APBA.

So come race with the NBRA, or the APBA, because to be honest, without each other neither org would survive. We are all boat racers. Each org has a set of rules to adhere to. Compromise and adapt to each one depending on which one you are running with. Don't change it, adapt to it.
