HA, funny you should mention that. Last week... modified a Merc for "C" mod, This week... modified a yamato for "C" mod. apples and oranges, cant touch the reeds, cant chamfer any edges, cant really raise the ports. all you really get is the stinger pipe. If you can do the work yourself the merc is a supercool project with a lot of tricks but in the end it still weighs a lot more than a Yamato. Dont get me wrong, I'm going to put them side by side and find out for myself whats best on a runabout and a hydro......Get This...when it's all over I cant race either one in pro. But if I did less work, spent less money, and had a slower boat I could. nice huh.

APBA has/had a pro class for Yamato 80's and 102's. It is/was called RB Hydro. As most of you know RB hydro is virtually dead, and going to be replaced soon by 175cc hydro. This is sad, as in the day there was many 80's and 102's on alky running as fast or faster than today's b or c mod. But if you really want to run an alky class, buy an alky motor. You will never be able to make a 102 keep of with a 350cc, 250cc, and would probably have a hard time getting by a new style 125cc. A good c-mod with a competition set up will run in the high 70's, which is very similar to the 125's I beileve.Sattler Racing R-15

Rb
Palmquist ran his CMOD at Depue last year in RB and took a second, very respectable. His main idea was to get it ready for the mod nationals the next week, you can run your mod there but there will some true RB,s there running alky motors, either way youll have a full class to play with.nightmoves

I agree lets cut out the 15 cubic omc from the line up and just let the kids race it...Once you get out of the Peach Fuzz age its time to move on, or take up knitting... I get tired of watchiing 15 cubic omc a class run 9 times a day.. Nothing like making half a dozen classes for one engine.. STUPID..... At least the 4 cyl merc draws a crowd... People like LOUD THINGS... if the c merc ran alone, alot would come out of the wood work... I can think of atleast 6 drivers in region 6 who own them...
Oh yeah ive been thinking of buying a runabout and hydro for the 15 cubic inch omc and run every possible class with one boat and one motor, between me and the kid ...because i want to be the guy at the drivers meeting who has to change the scedual because ive only got one motor and ive got to change restrictor a couple times inbetween a, axsh, j ,jpro and so on.. so my kid can race.
To sum it up There is a difference inbetween USFULL AND USLESS clasess...
My opinion may piss off others, Expecialy those over 20 who race the 15 cubic inch omc..
I race a yamoto mod and i think we should call it stockified not modified...

Your right there are a few that run.. I was at the nationals ... So where did all the 4 cyl merc go??? They are put away because for the most part they dont compete.. Most people choose the easy way out... Put a pipe on it and pull the rope and go... It takes a little home work to make a 4 cyl merc go.. And alo9t of wrenching... look at the cmerc Eric vanover raced for years With Expansion chambers.. and won a couple of championships with... Built by Bob Goller... They can run and they do run... I am building one my self because i dont ever want to see them go away.. as they have been... I may not be the fastest but you will have to make it over my wake...

Mike, this is an EXCELLANT post you made!!! All your points are well said. It does take ALOT more work (and $$$) to get the Merc to run with the Yamatos, but that is what makes it fun and more rewarding in the long run. Plus, the Mercs sound WAY better than the Yamatos.........Daren
