My father was at Carson's Marine in FL talking about motors. He mentioned you can get a 20 hp Tohatsu race motor. Is there such a thing? If there is does anyone know anything about these motors? What class you race them in and if there competitive? Im assuming you get them from Bass Machines?

I would guess he was referring to a Yamato.
-the 20" Y80 ?
Lots of confusion these days over who makes what.
Yamato currently is in its 3rd[4th?] iteration
-were they Fuji at one time ?
Tohatsu is big, 2nd only to Mercury, or bigger ?Brian Hendrick, #66 F

Several years ago APBA with Tom Johnston (TJ) and Ponch Trolian, tried the 18HP(20C.I.) Tohatsu 2-stroke with an OMC-A racing gearfoot adapted to it......It ran very well, started nice, looked great.....but I ran it several times with the Hot-Rods in B-STOCK hydro and it didn't have a CHANCE against the 7000-8000 rpm Hot-Rods (the current STOCK??) motor............at the time it was the same motor you could buy as a 9.9hp also with dif carb/timing? (These still are the HOT 9.9 decal'd fish'n motors when turn'd up to the 18hp specs.!!)....Later the feds/fish fuzz made Tohatsu/Nissan build a true, under 10hp, lake-legal motor and it became the 9.8hp 2-stroke, smaller cube, fish'n engine........The older 9.9/18hp engines are now very hard to find.
TJ made a simple adapter plate for the race'n foot, reworked a driveshaft to fit the gearfoot coupler, and it bolted up nice!!.....I think it later wound up on someones turn boat? with the stock gearfoot?
I thought it would of made a competative A-STOCK motor with the OMC's or the 25 hp Nissans/Tohatsus with the B-STOCK Hot-Rods?.....Plus the engines would of had very reasonable prices......built from fish'n motors as new or converted kits.
I tried to argue to look at class speeds instead'a cubic inches for new motors..........
But those suggestions were like blow'n a FARTT in church!!..... ......(This was about the time APBA was promote'n the current 9.8hp merc AXSH/R motors.)
Then APBA bought a 15hp Yamaha four stroke and TJ adapted the OMC-A foot to it......I worked with it for about a month and could not get past the rev limiter and the weight.....Had to test with my C-STOCK Pavlick hull to get enough speed to get on plane because just not enough RPM.........
Now we have the STOCK Sidewinder and everyone is happy...right?......(Still would like a price on a Sidewinder powerhead to try my exspansion chamber from the Hot-Rod I bought from Chuck Zolkowske.)......OPPS....There's another...FARTT!!Attached FilesLast edited by STEVE FRENCH; 12-03-2012, 05:35 PM.100N STEVE FRENCH > Nobody can hang with my STUFF!! >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tna3B5zqHdk
