New Boats for 2013

This is a multi-purpose boat: DSR - marathon, 850ccMR, and 1100ccPRO two-person runabout. It will also be used to terrorize local lakes with the turbo.

Sheesh! I forgot how long rigging takes. There's a long way to go, but coming along nicely: Sweet lines, nostalgic Merc. Debating on the tower paint. Cloud white is correct, but Phantom black is easy.......

No scales yet, but I'm guessing 240-ish as shown. This includes 20 Lbs of fuel tanks below deck. Not too bad as the beast is 14'-11". It will go on the scales after paint next week.

Outstanding Boat! I was going to send you a wiper for the windshield. Have you installed the water ski tow hooks. Remember that there is a little Quincy looper in your engine. Also love the bow photo with the teeth in the grin!

Thanks Alan, but I had to read the rules a dozen times to be certain this one would be legal: Forgot how picky stock outboard rules are! This engine will be stock, but the next one........

I think after running Mullet Lake you will want a cowling on the front deck to kind of hide behind. I've run the race without and with. Prefer the latter! The boat looks great and should be a great rough water boat. That's the greatest race. Miss doing it. Jack

Thanks for your thoughts. Dale and I discussed the need for a spray shield, and decided against it because the bow is 24-1/2" above the true bottom after the droop. This is at least 12"-14" taller than a conventional short course runabout. Kinda figure if I stuff with that depth, I'm not driving right. Time will tell.

Tim, I agree with your analysis and considered not mentioning the cowling because of the high angle of the bow. Boat looks great. I wish you a great race. Show those guys what a custon marathon boat can do. Consider a good way to flush the installed gas tanks in case they get submerged. I've seen guys miss the second day because of not being able to do so after a Sat. dump. I'm probably saying things that you are already aware of. I know this is not you first rodeo. Jack

While you may not "need' a cowling for the water issues, you probably want one for the aerodynamics... If a good bit of the drivers body or chest is sticking up above the decking there's a lot of drag produced that can be mitigated by a cowling that sticks up to near the bottom of your helmet (or higher if you put some kind of windshield on it. I'm not suggesting you look thru a windshield, you can, like most formula car drivers look over the top of it, but getting a fairing up to near the middle of the helmet is a good thing from an aero standpoint. Think of the difference as being between a convex surface that pushes the flow around the driver with a concave area (the drivers chest and arms) that acts like a parachute and slows you down a lot. I would think a good fairing would be worth a couple of mph at least.

I realize the boat is a bit heavy, but that high nose is also going to create a lot more front end lift than a typical runabout. That would scare me a bit, but maybe it won't be a big deal with the higher weight. Has anybody run something like this that you know of that had this high a nose and ran in the mid 70's? Just curious.
