I'll say it again: To all who are making the 302ssH Rules, it's predecessor, UIM OSY 400 already has the proper rules in order and they are highly functional.

Don't forget your best friends, which will highly help the success of this class: the Pro-Commission. They have established a three-year time-table to convert APBA OSY 400 to UIM OSY 400 and we are in the middle of year #1.

Why is this important? The 302 motor. Both classes will be 100% stock (less the prop shaft in OSY - you'll be able to run a 9/16) and when you speak of bang-for-the-buck on a race weekend, you need to be able to run the same boat/motor setup in two different classes.

My take on why SO racing isn't more popular, just take a close look at other forms of racing. What I've seen is that most other forms of local racing have sponsorships, advertisers, and spectators to help foot the bill for racing, including a little prize money here and there. For someone on a budget it can be discouraging to pay so much for entry fees per class, per race, just for bragging rights and some boat time. Don't get me wrong, if I had plenty of money I'ld still be doing it, but I can get cheaper thrills heading down to the local drag strip. I'm not saying what if anything can be done about the situation. I know many people have worked hard at promoting the sport.

Support Policy; Personally on the fence

Ok, so we are sort of interested but to be hooked (notice I did not say reeled in and landed) we need to be able to covert to other classes on the spot using the same basic equipment.

As for the gearfoot; ok, it can be changed out but the height? Why so deep? As Dean mentioned could this not effectively limit the motor options a hull could use and thus limit the class options of a team? Please reconsider this aspect of the proposed rules.

I have only heard of one other team (dwtSailor aka Deck Racing) voice an interest in participating in this class. All the rest of the rhetoric I am hearing here for the most part is arm chair chatter. I support the notion as a matter of direction to growth but I am trying to decide if I am willing to make personal commitment to funding a boat in this class. I don’t see too much risk as the equipment can easily be convertible to other classes (if prop height is set appropriately) but I do see risk in our initial ability to fill out a field to compete with. Who wants to spend the next few years at the back of a mixed heat of CSH/302SSH for enough numbers to build to have some chance to run in clean water?

Yea…on the fence here; time to call up our racing mentors and talk through the options. Looking forward to hearing from others interested in competing in this class.

I'd keep the 302ssh rules the same as CSH other than everyone will run a spec prop that is handed out at the race ( same as J's). As they do in the west coast, consistent winners have to move to CSH.

Excellent and simple Chris...IMO no need to add complected rules to a beginners class..Overall I'd like to support BUT I'd also like to get a 2'fer (Run my own prop and get trounced in CSH) Can't justify the expense to run 1 class..I'd like to be able to do what I usded to do w/AOF..2 Boats/2 Motors/2 Props=4 classes (2 Hydro/2 Runabout) At least we're all discussing this during the season, not waiting until October....

              Region 6 is in it!

Deck Racing, team 107S, 226M, and maybe even 100S would be interested in purchasing a single stock 302 before Grass Lake to have a second boat for testing and exhibition. By next year, all other members are a go...that's 3 entries!
I talked to the family, and Pops, Dave and I are all very interested in this class. I'll still be in 20 SSH, but for now, you can count on at least 3 entries at any MHRA race once we get the rules finalized!
I agree with Ray, guys step up to the plate! To quote Elvis..." A little less conversation, a lot more action please!"
When it comes to boat racing and the wife, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission, and of course I spent a number of nights sleeping on the couch!

In Japan the motors are run deep. I've been told without shaping the foot they can become unstable when raced at the height we run in CSH. I'm fairly certain that is why they proposing running the unshaped foot so deep

                    302 Super Stock Hydro

We will have a complete rig for sale at Grass Lake...I am providing the motor, Jeff Brewster the hull, Vic Brinkman the prop. If we feel we need to raise the height a little we will do so. Dave

Thanks Sean, that makes sense but...is a bit of a turn off. I wonder if shaping it and doing something else to slow it down would be fesable.

Hoosier, are you planning on attending the Grass Lake event at the end of July (which by the way is the Stock Outboard Nationals and I highly recommend you come: it’s like a weeks’ worth of boat racer camp for like-minded enthusiasts or the September event at which MHRA will be holding their second drivers school for 2012?

I will be testing the new 302 SSH rig at Grass Lake....we will be meeting as a group to discuss things...if we feel the height is wrong we can sure change it. I want to thank everybody for all of the great input...this is still a work in progress. Dave

                                302 Super Stock Hydro

Thanx for the interest Charlie. The 302 SSH committee had a phone conference last week, and we cleaned up a few rough spots on the rules and specs. All of the paramaters for the re-build centers are in place....final cost on rebuild will be determined but it looks to be in the neighborhood of $250 plus shipping. Not bad in my opinion. You will be able to take an existing motor and send it to a rebuild station to have it "de tuned" which means making sure it is essentially stock...which will hopefully allow people that have purchased 302 motors to run the class. We made a few minor changes in hull specs....don't have the rules in front of me (I am in Hawaii as I type this) but we sorted out a few grey areas. I am going to be working, along with Crown Partners, on a "Challenge Series" for the class this upcoming season, very similar to what the Mercury challenge series was like in the late 80s-early 90s, or some other form of promotion. More on that to come. There seems to be a ground swell of interest in this class....and we are going to make sure this thing is a success....any questions at all do not hesitate to call me at 425 246 4710, or call Jeff Brewster at 3308422119. Also..I still have the first sealed 302 motor sitting in my shop near Seattle...it is ready to run, and I can ship it out next week when I get back to whoever wants it. Price is $2500, which includes a prop from Vic Brinkman. I can take time payments on it or put it on layaway if you are short on cash. Dave Anderson
