      Mark can you find the article and post a link? Another question I know you can get torque specs and engine dimension specs for Yamatos on Ric's site but where is a good place to get specs on the older motors like OMC and Mercury?

        There is a book often available on E-Bay titled "How to Modify your Mecury" that is considered the "bible" for assembling Mecury Outboards. It includes a list of the "right" (fastest) parts by part number and serial number as well as torque specs, clearances, and critical tolerances of all types. Also techniques for tricky assembly stages.

        Anyone building a Merc, Stock or Mod will find value in the guide.

        Actually, a lot of the concepts in the guide carry over into any 2 cycle motor.

          The How to Modify Your Mercury was written by the late Harry Brinkman. Hopefully Alan VanWeele will republish it with any possible updates he comes across when he purchased Harry's Engines and rights to the book.

                    Just sent the money for the last copy of the old version. Dave says they are working on the new edition with many updates.

                      4-stone hone

                      Mark ,you don't need a 4-stone hone to deglaze with,they are used for fit clearance or to correct unstraitness or out of roundness.These hones are much more expensive and should be used in conjunction with a variety of machinest measuring tools(bore guage,micrometers etc.).Unless you are going to hone several blocks it's not worth the investment,take it to a reputable machine shop and let the pro's do it.

                        haa mike john meyers knows mercs inside and out and he honest dose good cheep work,,, is who we all useing and i set many d-mod records with his porting in the old days..and he did my triple digit v-rude also,,,

                            It was Don Muncie on John Kwast's board. Nothing more than insisting that the only way you can visually confirm a true bore is with a flat stone hone, dingle berries obscure imperfections by individually following the contours rather than riding on the smallest part of the bore

                              That is the article I was trying to find, I believe the four stone hone was for clearance
                              not glaze breaking.

                                The article mentioned above is on Charlie Williams' Outboardracing.com site.

                                The author of the article is Mike Petty who originally posted it on the ill fated Quincy/Swamp site about 8/9 years ago.

                                I took the article and upgraded it, editing it for spelling, syntax and readability. I also added the MK 20H parts list and information at that time. For a while this was posted on my Boatsport.org site and taken down at Mike's request at some point in time when it went over to Charlie Williams' site.

                                I haven't event touched my site since 2007 but this thread has given me a little initiative (thanks) to post all the new stuff that I'd prepared for the Boatsport site. Think I'll grab another cup of coffee and fire up the laptop.
