  • Fantasy - Pit Crew

There are some folks who work their butt off all weekend long to keep their team running and aren't currently racing.

    I'll start it off:
    - Don Allen
    - Mikey Pavlick
    - Jim Sweeney
    - Gary Pond
    - Craig Dewald (I dont think he sat once in 4 days of 90+ degree heat at DePue!)

    Craig Dewald

I have to agree... Craig Dewald! He has helped with my son's KPRO in the pits a couple of times last year.
The first time was at the Hartford, CT USTS race when I was having trouble getting my son's engine started.
The second time was at the World Championships in Lake Alfred. After my son stuffed his hydro in Heat #2, we had a team of people who got it ready for the next two heats! Jon Eldredge and a friend of his taped the front cowel and windshield back on, while Craig and Dave Jones got the water out of the engine and had it running! That was close- we had just enough time to put the prop back on and start the race!

      Bobby Christy.

While his brother Don was racing: ASH, BSH, CSH, DSH, AU , BU, AOH, BOH, and on some days CU, DU and 36; Bobby would have the rigs fueled , set-up and ready to run. this included motor swaps and drying out flipped equipment.

Some days Don ran every class on the schedule except JU. I don't remember him missing a heat or the race committee having to hold a heat because the Christy's were not ready. This was at a time when Don ran twenty five to thirty five days a year.

Can't forget the Rucker/Rautenberg crews! Susan, Sheryl, and Jeff! How many classes do those dang kids run? like 12 a weekend at least! Couldn't do it without the crew!

            Lyle & Ray

Since this appears to be an all category thread for pit crew I have to nominate my Dad Lyle Mason. He comes to every one of the races i go to and he races sometimes too. He has never let me down, or anyone else in the pits in the decades I have been racing.

I must say though, for a GREAT many of years my grandpa and grandma traveled to a lot of races after grandpa retired. My grandpa, Ray Mason, was the man for a pit crew. He always had the wrench, or screwdriver in his pocket and ready to use. And he spent countless hours setting up rigs and swapping engines, etc. And back home in the shop he turned out some pretty decent engines in his days. My grandma, Helen Mason was just as tireless in the pits. She was everyones grandma.

My Mom Jill Mason does a pretty decent job too. She lifts the back of the boat if it does not start in the water in my 850CCMH. And helps on all the other stuff too.

I guess I am blessed to have a great family of boat racers.

              My Dream Team

I have to throw my dad (Dwight Malhiot) on this list. Best engine roper I have ever seen! By far! It can be a cold starting PR or a high compression 1100. I have seen him start two of his competitors and then jump in his boat and start himself. If an engine sees him walking towards it, it would jump to life. That man has a gift.

Other dream team crew members: Craig Dewald (prop voodoo), Drew Thompson (wood working skills), Deek (Thirlby Crew, boat setup/ engine work), Ben Truly (all around pit b*tch)

I have always thought Billy Simmons was the guy. While he was not any one persons' pit person that I'm aware of, he was everybodys'. At Lockhaven, I've witnessed him hard at work for the entire 3 days without letup. Now that he is back driving, he may taper off some in doing all for others but knowing Billy, he'll keep at it. Thanks Billy for all that you do. Jack

                    Pit Crew

I would with out a doubt add Bob Tadych, Tim Dwyer, and Dale Bishop. All 3 are very helpful at all races. Dale brings boats and motors race ready to the races for others to drive not to mention goes out of his way for anyone who needs help in the pits or getting parts before a race. And Dale does not race anymore just does it for the sport and has for years.
Tim aka Timbob drives rigs countless hours to races flys in to the Nationals to help all racers out mostly Klemm. Not to mention all the cool paint jobs he has done over the years on boats for all of us. Thanks Tim!!
Last but not least Bob Tadych aka the real b tch boy just kidding otherwise known as fourblade50 is one of a kind. You can find Bob at most all USTS races working with the Kriers and many others including all us Ca guys.
Would have been tough without these 3 helping me thats for sure.

                    Todd

I will take these three any day!

                        L to R
                        Deb Howe (Bobby)
                        Trudy Gallagher (Brant Latter)
                        Christine Brewster (lucky me)

Christine holds boats, gets a wet hoo-hoo, trips over rocks and bloodies her shins, provides water and cold towels to not only myself but my competitors.
When I leave the pits, she doesn't leave the water until all in my class make it out.
She's the best in my book!

                            Agreed on Simmons...

Billy would sponge until there was no more water in the boat, then sponge some more just for good measure. What a guy! Also as important to me is Bill the Doctor Hoctor. I am pretty neat with my stuff, but that guy can make a boat sparkle with only a half of a kleenex and some spit shine. Our pits are a better place because of these two men. Oh, and my wife is the best...
