The Top O and many others are Stock events now. What would the future hold? We sure don't want to combine and then exclude the mod engines from numerous events. Lets think this through. In my experience in both Stock and in Mod, I have found a very different mindset. Not that either is right or wrong, just different. I think I like it like that. Jack

Mods at Top'O
We have had classics at Top'O the last two years and hope the idea grows in years to come. However, at club meetings some concern was expressed about the noise of the converted 20H. It was decided that we would just run them and see if there were any complaints, instead of ask if the noise would be a problem. No complaints so far. I can almost guarantee there would be complaints if open-pipe racing were to take place. Just my opinion only.
On combining stocks and mods, if that is what is needed to keep us racing, then let's do it. But if there is any other way to do it, I would rather not spend my week-ends listening to open-pipe racing. I know I may not be making any friends here, and I am sorry for that, but I just don't care for that kind of noise

Stock Mod Combo
i think the biggest benefit would be on the administrative end. We wouldn't be taxed for two commissions and printing two seperate sets of rules. Granted the meeting would be heated and fun to watch, but it is time to stream line some things.
I think this would be a 1st step. Let everyone digest it. I know it is not popular with everyone but it will save money.
Marathon? Top-O-Michigan is a club race. The list the classes that they know will fit their event.
Same with local races. You list the classes that fit.
I am for improvement and looking for ways to sustain our sport. We have witnessed what doing nothing can do.
I am not sure any category has a perfect system.

Vote for Dave...........APBA President!!

Darren, we don't see eye to eye, that is obvious. I will sill simply agree to diasgree with everything you say.
Why is that some folks from the west coast want to change the way points are tallied for high points, and how the Hall of Champion points are, make it more towards how many boats you race against. Yet when someone wants to combine classes to make this happen, some people simply are up in arms about "NOT MY CLASS"
Dana's plan does not eliminate anything, it simply combines thems. If you stop and think about it Darren, if the categories combined, you might grow in entries. I think the plan would still allow step -ups like it currently does. I hope that would not go away.
And if someone wants to run in a 3 boat race becasue they are scared to race against 10 or 12 boats, then they probably shouldn't be allowed to race boats in a full field to begin with. That kind of fear is not safe for anyone out there. It is called panic.
Lubby, I understand your question. True boat racers will stay with the change. We have been worried about "ourselves" for the last 100 years in APBA, look where we are at now... in any region at any race except the well known ones, they are lucky to get 30 - 75 trailers. We now consider 100 entries a big turn out... 100 entries provides for a lot of 3 - 5 boat races. Some are full, but most won't be. Combine the classes you have full fields, you get a lot of testing time becasue you don't need to race from 9:00 AM until dark and then finish up Saturday's schedule on Sunday morning and then go to one heat racing for Sunday... that plain sucks no matter what.
If I appear to come off as an ahole, sorry, but I have been in this sport longer than a lot of people. My family raced long before modified was even a category. I have seen the good old days, and the bad days. I have seen a lot of people come and go. What I have not seen is sustainable growth in the last 25 years. It does not matter who you piss off at this point, the time to change is now, becasue I for one don't want to see this sport die.
did I miss where lots of people on the West Coast have asked for the points system to be changed????? As to entrys, etc............you might wanna do some more research and find that in Reg10, entrys have not suffered like elsewhere in the country, so for you to tell us how to do it better, tells me you lack quite a bit of knowledge in the area. Again I state, Reg10 has no problem running all 3 (plus OPC and Inboards occassionally also) categories together each race weekend.........
as to a "newby" being "scared" (prolly not the correct term) of racing with 12 other boats, you will also find (if you do your research again) that there are quite a few racers that do not feel "comfortable" racing like that and it takes some time for them to be comfortable.................has NOTHING to do with no being allowed to race PERIOD!!
I agree with one thing you said................we shall agree to disagree.........Last edited by mercguy; 10-13-2010, 07:55 AM.Daren

Donald Trump's TV Show
I was watching You're Fired or whatever his show is called and I learned something.
He fired a lady who told her test that everything they were doing was wrong and she was right. Trump's complaint with her was she didn't off a solution to the problem.
I caome from a long line of complainers, but feel we've always offered a solution.
Right now, I guess I don't see the problem with Stock and MOD being two different Divisions of APBA, except they are both in the tank if you admit it or not.
My solution would be to join MOD and Stock and elect three people to make all the decisions, give them a three year contract. These three people would use their power to BUILD racing.
How would they do that? Use thier power as a "BULLY PULPIT" to get citys to open up race site. Use their power to get sponsors for Nationals... Use their powers to really explain what is happening in APBA RACING.
Most of our APBA leaders seem to end up being Nancy Pelosi's or Harry Reid. Once in power, they get on their ladder and you can't get them off.
We're doomed, liquor stores and all!

As far as cities go we worked for at least 4 years to have a APBA-USTS race at Hartford Connectuict. As all that were there will contest it was very successful. The population of the city is 1.5 million,we need to race in cities thats for sure. But and here is the big but you have to put on a great show and most who race do not know what that is---if you want to get my reasoning as to what that is come to Detroit at the national meeting and I will tell you in person.

Why Not Combine ?
I have received messages about people writing up proposals to combine categories, change the class sturcture, etc. The one big problem that seems to be consistent is time. We all have lives outside of boat racing, jobs, family, etc.
This is why I mentione perhaps APBA should hire an outside unbiased rep to simply clean house. Then all the people that say not my class can be pissed at them and not another racer.
I don't have all the answers, I always admited that. But I have seen and heard enough to know what to do.
I sincerely hope more people get involved in a decision making capacity, becasue the same few people on HR seem to be the only ones concerned.
And Darren, no I don't want to run for Pres, we all know that position offers no room to make a difference, just make decisions on other peoples presentations.Dave Mason

ouch!
a bad move for me, and b 4 i get a [selfish] response 2 this, consider the point. if dsh and dmh along with combininig dsr and dmr were 2 become a combined class the result would b 4 this writer 2 seriously consider all the monies spent 2 just enjoy this family gathering. i travel quite a distance round trip 2race,and 2 have 2decide on which motor 2 hang on the transom 2 run 1 class [course it would b a mod] would b cause 2 look at reducing the number of races i would attend. if dave mason's thought along with others would become a class structure [dave must not have a 44xs in the trailer box] the 44 i just picked up would b a huge waste of money. have a lot more 2 say on this subject but it took me way 2 long 2 get this down.

Anyone that has paid attention knows that the 44xs classes have been on the edge of extinction for 10 years or more. Yet, people still buy them and then whine and cry when proposals get made to sunset them.
At least in this proposal the equipment does not become a useless hunk of slag.
The 44xs is still legal so you can get your best friend, neighbor or dude down the street a ride. And everyone knows once they have a ride, they are hooked.
If this is not done then nobody will be racing because no club will be able to get enough 4 boat classes together to cover the cost of an event. You can take all your equipment and go home and never come to another race if you want or you can choose to participate by helping new racers get rides with your duplicate equipment and assist growing the sport.
If you love the sport it is an easy choice.
