New Boats
Very interesting stuff. I built a new boat in 2010 for my Tohatsu, and was suprised at how heavy it came in at....and, I wrecked it in May, and the repairs added even more weight. Right now I am at 520 with me in it at the end of a heat...not horrible, but way more then it should be. I used 12 mil okume for the cockpit sides, 6 mil on the bottom up to the break, then three mil...and I used 4 mil Okume for the decks. I only weigh 150 lbs dripping wet (I am skinnier then I look) and would love to get 20lbs of weight out of the boat. Any ideas out there?

Dave I use 5mm on the bottom and 3mm for the deck. Depending on the size of the boat I use 5mm plus 3mm for the coaming wall or two laminates of 5mm on the larger craft. I think most of the weight comes from the framing wood but just dropping a mm in thickness of plywood helps to. I plan to get a scale and start weighing boats from now on.Mike - One of the Montana Boys

At any rate, I am thinking you used to heavy of cockpit sides. Those add tons of weight if not done up with weight in mind. I would cut them out and replace with some composites. That is about the only way you are going to achieve any weight loss in the boat without some major construction.Dave Mason

Boats.
Thanx for the info Dave.....when I went for a swim out of boat I went right thru the side of my 12 mil cockpit ....was sorta suprised..when repaired, had to put a doubler in. I have used 5 mil okume on the bottom of a d boat, and it did not hold up to well. On my current boat I have the back half 6 mil, and the front half 3 mil, which I would think would take a little weight out. I am gonna take a real close look at the thing this weekend, and see what I can do with it. It is suprising to me how much damage a d stocker sustains when ti crashes....we are not going that much faster then C, and most C stocks seem to come thru crashes pretty well, while D stocks seem to get demolished. Just an observation.

Is that bike an old Rokan? If so, it looks like about the era of an MK-6....
