  • When does it make sense to grandfather records???

It seems we have lots of records that were set before restrictions were put in place.

For instance, we've been chasing the BSR record that Dewald set over 20 years ago before the CCs were dropped and before there was a height restriction -- and never have come even close. I believe there are other records that haven't / won't get broken because of restrictions that have been put on the classes (Js are now at 1 3/4" vs. 1 3/8" for instance).

Is this just the case in the classes I'm paying attention to (in my 2nd year back racing Stocks)? Or, is this a consistent problem that needs to be tackled at the next annual meeting?

    Thoughts welcome...

Makes sence. Make it a case for the next annual meeting.

      Records

All records set should stand based on the criteria at the time. Those guys earned the recognition under the rules/regs that they competed
within. Amen to DeWald 20 years ago. Records after restrictions put in place should reflect that action.

That was one of my first thoughts when CSH when from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch propshaft height a few years ago. But CSH/20ssh/OSY records have been falling since that change. Some classes like BSR would make sense to grandfather the records.
BUT CSR hasn't changed all that much (some would consider it's only gotten faster in the last 15 years) yet all the records there are 8-15 years old, held by the Frolick family and Rich Runne. It's a good question for the Commission. I think you may know someone in that circle to bring it up for proposal at the national meeting in Detroit....

With The Invention of This Modern Thing Called A Computer

Back in the OLD days, APBA/UIM kept track of records on paper napkins, then wrote them in the rulebook.

With the invention of the computer, no record shouls be "GRANDFATHERED" out, Just put an asterrisk by it and and explain the rules.

My 1964 CU kilo record was made before there were .030 pistons. My DU kilo was at like 550 lbs, and .015 pistons.

Keeping old records in a computer and note on bar napkins is easy.

To ne, drawing a line in the sand, start 2011 with CURRENT MODERN RULES, would be where to start...but leave the old records for old farts.....as some of you young bucks may live to be old farts, too.

An "A" Sidewinder record should be faster than a 15 A OMC....When we raced J, the exhaust water line could not be plugged.

My 2CENTS WORTH, keep the old, start new, when a rule change comes into effect, open the record books up new for that class.

D MOD Runanout has a record...This year start 750 CC Mod Runabout records.
