  • Mark 20H

We've acquired an original numbers matching 20H, from a yaaaaaaad sale!

Anybody tell me the year for SN 788524?
It looks like it needs a rewind spring and the ignition gone through.

"Congratulations Dave you are now the proud owner of a 195? Kiekhaefer
Model 20H sn 788524. A couple of good things about the engine is that
it appears to all original, the sn on the clamp bracket data plate
matches the sn on the block, however the crankcase lead seal is
missing. The engine turns over quite easily and seems to have ample
compression. I pulled the lube plug in the lower unit to find that
the unit is filled with what appears to be Lubraplate 105 white
grease. And yes it has a two blade brass propeller mounted on the
shaft. The original gold paint still covers about 50% of the lower
unit, the intermediate lower unit is all original and the clamp screws
look to be original and are in excellent shape, the swivel pin is free
and both shock springs are in place. On the down side the rewind
starter spring is broken and there is no ignition spark. While the
spark plugs were removed (J4J) I squirted some oil into the cylinders
to further preserve the cylinders until you take possession.

I really feel once the starter spring is replaced and the ignition is
repaired the old beast will come to life. Hey forgot to mention that
he threw in a hand full of new piston rings and several fuel pump gasket sets that were left by the original owner. And yes it has what appears to be an original Keikhafer steering bar. Also as a separate purchased I acquired one water pump removal tool (the big aluminum fixture the removes the
conical nut on the lower unit) and a spare brass prop"
I always thought growing up would be cool, I was wrong!
The other day GG laughed at me because I take more pills a day than she does....

    Dave,

It's a 1954. Mine that my dad got for me in 1954, was serial # 788315.

      20h

Nice find wish I had one. All I have is the 20H tower and gear foot with 1:1 gears and corresponding brass prop. Somewhere along the past years from 1957 the power head went south?
The SN 786613 thru 790612 are 1954 thru 1956. So yours could be 1954 if they made no more than 1930 in 1954 otherwise 1955 model.
Here are sites for some parts.

BTW the Luberplate 105 was the recommended grease for the lower unit. I could never figure out how this thick grease would get on the gears with the drive shaft going 7000 and the grease flying off onto the inside of the case?

Here is what a finished engine looks like, including a new seal and fresh inked inspection stamps. We have done 8 of these in the past two years and couple of the conversions. Visit our web site aeroliner-boats.com

          20H finished

          Hi David

Great looking restore. How about bringing one of those to the Tavares Antique Outboard meet this May 21/22? See you there on the 22.

Dad saved this stuff from their 20h(s)

David, do you have the paint codes for the green, gold and the flywheel gray/green?

            I'm also looking for,
the front cover (shield) that stays attached to the side cover
and an original copy of the powerhead - tower housing conversion manual.

            Thanks
            Dave

              Paint codes

              Dave
The fly wheel is painted PPG DP40LF Epoxy primer it is a very good match for the original color. The green is PPG Bavarian Green DBC44932 basecoat with PPG Concept clerar coat. I think the color needs to be darkened up a bit, one or two shades. I have just reformulated the Gold and have not tried spraying it yet. The gold I have used is also a PPG DBC paint, I will look for the codes and post them when I find them.
The clear coat leave to high a gloss that needs to be rubbed out. I use 2000 & 2500 wet paper, then rubbing compound, then polishing compound then glazing compound and finally after 30 day a good carnuba wax.

                Gold paint formula

This is the formula I used for the PPG gold a Deltron 2000 mix. This will make one quart of base coat which is enough for four or five engines when thinned out per instructions.
                DMD 649 CLEAR 52.2
                DMD 1686 FINE ALUM. 339.4

                DMD 641 YELLOW 130.5
                DMD 648 WEAK BLACK 36.5

                  Thanks!
Dad is picking up his early fathers day / birthday present this weekend, the conversion parts for the 20H. Now he has to decide how he wants to display it (after he (we) take it for a ride with the conversion on it....)
