  • Megaphones are legal in AOF also. I don't think anyone ever won more C Mod races than Brian Payn with the RC Hawie/Payn engineered engines. I usually did the timing in testing, and the magaphones were always at least 3 mph faster without even trying. And these were old time horns. When we had to add the stingers, sliders were ok, IF you knew how to use them. I am sure Lee makes a quality set up. Always hard to get those 302's dialed in. The boat should be a flying type. Only want just the prop in the water. And, the props were always completely different than the 102 or 202 props. Never really did get the 302 mods to run as fast as the 202 or 102 though.
Ps. I sound like I know what I am tialking about, don't I? Well, at one time we had 23 of those darn Yamatos. Had son, daughter, husband, grandson running all at the same time.

    • In AOF I think Rusty Bonin of Beaumont TX still holds the all time record. Here is Brian with a horn. He even ran this rig with the PR's (edited, I meant to say RB Class) at DePue nationals and did some 3rd places with gas!

As for Megaphones on a 102 or 302.. they work AWESOME. It is legal in NBRA. And they do it. You thought you could get fast with your little stingers.... not a contest with megaphones that work. Those in the know understand the value of a megaphone and the complete change it does to an engine.

It is not legal in APBA since the 70's or early 80's maybe for ANY new engine to have an open exhaust style megaphone. Joann Ellis implemented this rule when she was VP of MOD.

Anyway, good luck on the 302 MOD. Sounds like you are down on power since you are not supposed to slide your pipe. I am sure Sattler will get you straight and fast.

looking forward to seeing YOUR Cmod rig at the Nat's.......

I am to fat for a C Mod, where you been ? I don't own one.
I am not planning on going to Cali for the nat's. Just not in the cards, and as I recall, you talked me out of it not that long ago in a Private Message.

            Connie,
Has been a long time, but I still have Brian's C-mod y-102 pipe in a sleeping bag under my bed. It will come out this summer. I am coming back to see YOU this summer. I think it is the end of July for a week. Steve 22-R

            • Steve, I can't wait to see you. Been too long. We will have to have a toast and a final good bye to Marc Moberly. I miss him too. Last week in July we will be in DePue for PRO nationals. Are you coming there? Only about 150 miles from my house. Let me your trip details.
C Mod is such a fun class. I can remember that Brian was such a PAIN in the butt at the boat races when he was young. It took the whole bank to babysit him. He started C mod at the age of 12. And he won some races, of course he was already running the other Yamato classes. Finally, that class started going so fast that they upped the age limit to 16, but grandfathere him in. (both APBA and AOF) I believe that everyone felt it was safer for him to be in a boat on the water than in trouble on the beach.
We never were very happy with a modified 302 however. As I said before, we had better luck with the 102 and 202 (which is legal in AOF) as modified C's. We found out the props needed to be different on the 302's. (for our engines anyway).
See you in about a month then.

You are correct. And it still looks good, especially with that great driver you have. I think that boat has won races in all four cornersof the country, and a lot of them. I can remember picking that boat up at the Hemp "factory:. Snowing like crazy and we got stuck. Thought we would be in Milwaukee forever.

                      • I would just like to say thanks to a few folks who really helped me out with this project. I know progress will be slow from now on but we gained another 7 MPH this weekend but have developed a new problem that I am sure we can get figured out.

Thanks to Sonny, Mike Sattler, Lee Tietze, Dave Curtis, Dave M and anyone else I forgot but know you helped. Thats right, My friend Cheyney too.

Glad to hear you are finally getting some speed out of the boat ! I just Bought Gene Laes C-MOD, going to Lake Pleasant July 24th for my first race in 24 years ! Might make it east of the hills before the year is over.

                          • I would like to say that thru my ups and downs we started the season with one C mod and now at this last race we were up to 5. I think that this was great. It would be fun to see even more. This includes some step ups but at least a couple are interested in actually getting the pipes for next year.

Exactly what I was thinking... haha that boat sure has a lot of laps on it by now and it's still a winner. Glad to see Kyle L is having fun as well as learning the building/repairing aspect of racing.
