I'd never kick out a hydro, when the motor is not running right. Because when you fix the motor problem and it comes alive, that's when blow overs happen. Seen it too many times...

People say kick it out, jack it up, people who don't know do what others tell them. Then 1/2 hour later they find a bad spark plug, so they go make a lap (with a new plug) and then end up on their head.

I've never put a driver on his head, and don't plan to start now

      • Can you get away

        Mike,
If you can get away for a couple weeks (august 17/18 to 29/30) come up to Lake Quinault for testing as much as you want and race at Quinault the first week stay at the lake all week with more testing. Then the next weekend go to Eatonville Friday for apba testing and race sat. and sun. (28 and 29). If we can not get your engine running right we can set up one of my power heads you can use one of my power heads the rest of the year. While I figure out what is going on with yours. How did the engine run before you put the pipe on it. The pipe will not make a slow engine fast.

Has anybody tried a diff. pipe setup on the 302? Something similar to the downdraft exhaust you see on some Formula E motors, or do you have to have the long stinger pipe like I see on all of the rigs? I seem to remember Steve Peterson running a box on the side of his E mod rig....had a pipe coming out of it at the end..sure seemed fast to me. Any thoughts?

The pulse style exhaust system you are referring to work really well on the triple cylinder OMC. Not sure if anyone has tried it on the 302, but If I recal megaphones are not legal in c-mod anymore? Am I wrong? Anyway, a conventional stinger style pipe has proved itself to work very well on the 102 & 302.

Dave you were in Oroville last weekend right? Did you see Daren's c-mod runabout run? That things was rolling really good from the video I seen. Also, he has seen very hi 70's with that same motor on his hydro and he is over weight for the class.

I don't want this to become a pissing match, but who cares about national titles and who's sliding their pipes, they are using different designs. Heck J Michael Kelly and Bob Wartinger both hold C-Mod records with Lee's design without sliding the pipe so what gives? Who's theory is right? Both are right, just depends on the design.

I built a 102 pipe setup which has 2 pipes and they both slide, but it is a totally different design than Lee's.

Right now we are just trying to make it run correctly. It's easily 15mph off the pace, sliding the pipe is not going to give him 15 mph. There is another problem.

              WELL SAID Mike!!

                      • Steve that is a great article and I think that is what Dave was looking for. It also explains why if the pipe was designed to be Fixed that it should stay that way for optimum performance.

I also found out that when you move a pipe designed to be fixed it changes the fuel mixture a lot.

                        • dave the exhaust on a 3 rude will only work on 3cyl's at a time... pulse tune... because of the scavenging affects of 3 holes at once...need bounce pipe for the cmod stuff

Thanks Mike and Darren, you guys rule. Don't slide your pipes. i don't know Lee's design except seeing it run on a motor. Maybe things are a little different on the west coast.

As for Megaphones on a 102 or 302.. they work AWESOME. It is legal in NBRA. And they do it. You thought you could get fast with your little stingers.... not a contest with megaphones that work. Those in the know understand the value of a megaphone and the complete change it does to an engine.

It is not legal in APBA since the 70's or early 80's maybe for ANY new engine to have an open exhaust style megaphone. Joann Ellis implemented this rule when she was VP of MOD.

Anyway, good luck on the 302 MOD. Sounds like you are down on power since you are not supposed to slide your pipe. I am sure Sattler will get you straight and fast.
