Carry one in the boat trailer at all times.

A spark tester, timing light, air pump, and dial indicators are also nice tools to carry at all times.

I cannot live without a good set of calipers, and I forgot that one on my list.

Air compressors are nice, but a hand pump with a 0-15lbs gauge is also very handy. Ask me about it this weekend...

The wet finger spark tester(s) usually don't stand around very long when your running a MSD Ignition System

I have a hand vacumn pump that I got from Snap on but don't know of a use for it boat racing. I use to check choke pull-offs and secondary operation on carburators when I was a auto tech. Maybe I will put it in the trailer to.

I think it was last race somebody was checking for spark and asked me to hold the wire. WON'T DO THAT AGAIN!! Needless to say he had spark!!!

A vacuum pump won't do much for you. A pressure pump is a handy way to check for/and find leaks in lower units and crankcases.

Do yourself a favor. Always use a screw in type gauge (that seals good), and a good quality one at that. Remember you get what you pay for.

.......same here, never understood why people buy cheap ass tools?????????? This should be a tool everyone has in their trailer...........funny how people will try to diagnos problems WITHOUT checking compression first.........

                • Is it just me or can mod classes get frustrating. Tried both props yesterday and they both worked equally well but no speed. Still getting waxed by CSH'S!!!!! And now we can't get the shear pin out of the last prop so another project.

Our next race is in 2 weeks over the forth of July so I will try one last time. It will be our last race with testing. I am really bumbed we got no testing this week since the wood debris was so bad Friday.

I will tell you ONE last time..........you have something wrong with YOUR motor OR the way you have the mod kit installed!!!! I have the same Tietze pipe setup on my motor (the pipe does not slide) and mine runs just fine...............just as reliable as a STOCK 302...........

                      • Daren, you are probably right. We will try it on another boat. I think it is from being on a laydown boat but we will put it on the MJR or the Sorensen and see what happens. Right now I get a reading of 7200RPM and a speed of 61 tops but the RPM's don't hardly change going thru the corners. I think the boat is to glued to the water. I ran the prop even with the bottom of the boat and kicked in 3/16 of an inch. I also want to put the pipe back at the original length now that I have 4 blade props. It is really hard with the rivers being out of shape to get any testing done. The pipe is fixed. Right now it is extended 2" out.

I am also working on a system to move the engine back 8" on the transom to get the CG further back. I still like driving the Laydown. And it is very reliable. I always come back except when I did not locktite the throttle.

I also want to try a smaller driver. Like Guido size Mike Sattler you avaliable or Danny Bishop.

I am looking at selling all my DSH stuff and getting at CMH rig for next year. What do I need to do? What is the best motor? What props do I need? I think I can see what works for a boat......

Dave, Get a good 302 and a Tietze pipe set-up if you want to win. You've seen Daren's run.

                            • Dave, make sure when you order Lees pipe include his water pick up system and order it now for next year. That is a must he needs to know now!!!

If you read all this thread you should know what to do and what not to do

If you are real serious than get the short tower to. I would say if you like kneelers I would stick with them. I think getting a Laydown to work is a lot more work
