You're right! The sponson did come off. That's the Half and Half Hoffman.
Chris and Jim (Not the Hippie) Fairchild cut off both sides added 2 inches of width and put 2 1/4 inches of lift in the rebuild. Really made the boat come alive with my fat belly in it! It's now called the hoffchild

      2. I agree. Some kids are ready to go faster at 11, and some drivers are too heavy at 11 to compete in J.

I'd like to add that we also make no changes to the 10 year old rule about plugging the motor (for all the reason's I'd mentioned earlier in this thread).
Ernie was testing a J and lowering the motor incrementally at Havasu this weekend. I don't know what results they achieved.

I've said it before, I'll die saying it. Loose the restrictor plates, loose the expensive racing gear cases, run stock gear cases with stock props.

We tested extensivley that way, and ran consistently at 40-42, the boats are more stable, the rig costs less, and the problem is solved.

I know that is not a popular solution, but until you try it, you will never know.

We have tried it. It works well. Since my kid is out of J, it's a moot point for us.
