  • Race entry fees...

Does you club give refunds at your race if there is bad weather?

If so how do you pay for the throphies, music, pa, ambulance, insurance, sanction, fuel, towing, shirts, port-a-poties, etc...? All the bills you have regardless if the race goes or not. Do you pad the entry fee and then hope for a few good races before a bad one?

If you don't refund, do you put it on the sanction or is it understood? Up here we still give refunds and it cripples the club each time.

Our races are race entry fee funded. We're too small to a group (volunteer wise) to go after real sponsors. So when a race is rained out we take a huge hit and pray many people don't ask for a refund or only a portion.

Also if there is poorish weather it's a constant argument as to whether we should start racing or not... cuz if a boat goes on the water we're on the hook for all the insurance money. If there was no refunds we could fit in any racing we could instead of delaying to see if things are going to get better or worse.

So what does your club do?

TRORA refunds entry fee if weather forces cancellation of race schedule.

We only receive minor sponsorship for one of our 4 races...so entries fund our races.

We do our best to keep costs at an absolute low in order to avoid financial catastrophe.

One trend I have seen (and employed) is this. If weather cancels Saturday races, you run two heats on Sunday. Heat 1 is Saturday's race, heat #2 is Sunday's race. That way, the club gets 2 days of entry fee.

      From region 10's next event.

In case of a blow-off day, the first entry will be retained to help defray costs.

That's a neat approach. Thanks for pointing it out.

One heat racing causes an uproar up here... haha. I think they would elect to cancel a day and run two heat racing here. I"m sure the single heat would be nice for people who came a long way or are chasing points.

The drawback to running one heat racing for both days on Sunday is the fact if you happen to have some sort of mechanical issues, you are scored for 2 DNS or 2 DNF and you are screwed if you are points chasing. Not everyone chases points, so for some this is a great thing. These two DNF or DNS count towards your races allowed for calculating high points. In Mod it is crippling. I had it happen to me last year in Alex, a simple stator failure cost me two races, there was not enough time in between heats to change anything.

For the clubs it is a great idea to help with expenses.
