  • Q. about hydro set up

I have a hydro Im refinishing w/ a few repairs, its a Bunky 20SS/C & it has the cockpit slightly off to port. Would the proper thing be to put the motor dead center between the airtrap lines or centered in the transom [1/2" to port] ?
I read that I will have to get used to driving it but welcome the challenge. It seems to have a ram air effect built into the bottom front.. sorta concave towards the rear till the sponson backs then it bends into the flat afterplane. The deck is pretty well humped about midship then slopes down to the stern a good amount [based on other hydros Ive looked at] Id guess this to mean I can expect it to lift well. Ill post pics as soon as I can. Any input will be appreciated.

    Try the search

I remember a couple of months ago there was a discussion about that very subject.

I'll bet if you used the search function, you could find it easily.

Don't hold me to it but I think there was general agreement that the motor belonged in the middle of the motor mount.

So why don't you test it with the motor centered on the boat and again with the motor centered in the cockpit and see where it runs best? Seems like an easy experiment and then you'll KNOW for sure rather than just believe what some chump told you that may or may not be applicable to your rig.

The idea of the off set cockpit was to shift the cg of the boat, motor and driver etc. to the inside of the turn and thus reduce the tendency to reduce tipping about the right rear non trip. All hydro setups behave different in this regard.

As stated just experiment with the engine in both positions and see what feels best for you.

I always found that Bunkys' boats in 20, C and D ran better with the motor in the center of the boat, not offset. They never had a problem turning either way, but run better straight with the motor centered. I owned 5 and drove a dozen+, but nothing beats testing to you own feeling.

Center of the planeing surface, center of the air traps.... Been there..done that.. No question about it center of the bottom is the only place to be.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.
