Dave, Next time you get to Johnsons lumber, take a look at their sassafras, it had good strength, cuts clear and lighter than oak. It was a #1 wood for the old boat builders.

I also checked and there is such a thing as Obeche plywood but can't find anyone that sells it in the US.

R&RS and Aetna Plywood, both in Chicago sell the Obeche plywood. But it is for laminating plastic laminate over etc and not for exterior use. I've used it one time, 3/4", on a Dairy Queen job. I once told the salesman from R&RS about the Obeche lumber I had and he wanted to where I got it. Seems he had people that bought the plywood and wanted the lumber to match for there project.

I looked at that one time, it is a little to heavy for my requirements in boat building. From what I have seen and handeled, for strength to weight my scale is this:

1. Obeeche
2. Sitka
3. Butternut - Very soft wood, have to double thickness for frames, but still light.

4. White Pine or clear pine.

Dave.....the reason I said to check was that I was there a year ago with
Jesse Ward and uncle Mark and they bought the obeeche that they are
building the new MJR with. Looked like pretty nice stuff so may not be
a bad idea to give them a call.

Hi Phil,
Might I suggest contacting Tom Cronk, Wally Schilff, or Gary Pugh. They should be able to give you some valuable information on the what & where's of wood in Florida. I use white boat cedar here. Lighter than sitka, less $, but Sitka is still the strongest. I have found that when you crash over almost "any-rate" of speed, wood will break!

Sorry Dave.....was just a rider and was a quick trip up and back.....had
no idea that we were that close to you. Guess I'll have to owe you one
or catch you on the next trip up there.
