Fuel tank accessories

Hoping to find some resources here. I am going to build an aluminum fuel tank for the outside rear cockpit of KT's boat. Two goals to be achieved here.

1) take the tank off the transom so she has a little more room.
2) expand the number area on the left side of the boat by using the outside of the tank for the number placket.

I need options for fuel neck and caps. My neighbor owns a big chopper store, and the options that custom bikes have right now all are with vented caps. I need a non vented cap that I can install a pipe nipple and hose to vent.

I have seen some pretty cool tanks other drivers have made, and know within the reach of this forum, someone knows where to get a good neck and cap.

Anyone have resources or places to find what I'm looking for?

Tank Option

In all of the A's that our family has had since the OMC(i.e. NO steering bar tanks) my dad has built "L" shaped tanks that fit on the back of the transom. The up tube extends up the transom on the inside of the clamps and ends with a cap at about transom height. The bottom section runs horizontally under the kickout bracket and ends near the outside cockpit side and ends with the pickup(which pushes the fuel to the pickup when low). They are made of 2 1\2 dia. alum. tube. They require machined pieces for the two ends but are worth it. They end up holding just under 1gal. and put all that weight as far back and as low as possible as well as move it all out of the way of your #'s and your driver. I wish I had a good pic. available, It would have shortened the explanation and made it far more clear. P.M. me if you would like more info, I'll try to help however I can.

with many vented caps you can drill out the vent hole and use a nipple.
or just fill the vent hole and vent however you choose

The problem with the L shaped aluminum is that it won't work with a transom thrust jack for OMC and Merc without allot of work converting back.

Alan Brown is sending us the bracket for the Merc to use with the thrust jack we use on the OMC.

I saw that cap, I don't want a vented cap. I have found a weld in bung and non vented screw cap at a local buggy shop, it's 2 3/4" total width. I was then going to thread a nipple and run a hose just like a motocross bike uses, but am exploring most of the options first.

This is why a steering bar tank would be ideal!

Plastic ones

I have seen some very simple plastic square containers with a great wire bracket. Does anyone know where they came from. They look like a fluid resovour for a car or tractor or something?

We are currently using a Caterpillar tractor radiator overflow tank, all plastic, indestructible, but it mounts inside the boat. This tank is from the B series Multi-terrain loaders, and cost about $40.00.

Tad Olson has a few of these, not sure where he got them though. they are ok but the snap on plastic cap ican be leaky, plus you have to be carefull with how you route the vent tube as the vent fitting is molded in pretty low and you can easily get gas coming out of the tube into the boat. they are light and inexpensive though.

The overflow tanks can be purchased from your local Napa store. I have used them for Lauren's boats for years.

Fuel Cap & Filler Neck

I sell a fuel cap and neck. Neck is 2 3/8 O.D. x 2" I.D. 6061 Aluminum.

This is where I run my tank with the AX its 2 in wide by 5 in deep and 12 in long its made with a 2 by 5 in aluminum tube and a 1/4 inch plate weld to the top and bottom of the tube. The fuel neck is just brass 1 and 1/4 id pipe with a pvc cap. Bolts right up to the back of the transom. I have another one with the same dimentions made of wood that lasted for two seasons but is giving up so have to make another one but it weights less then a pound made of wood.

Auto Racing Fuel Cap Option

If you have a drag racing/speed equipment shop near you, many of the speed shops also sell machined aluminum, non-vented caps for fuel cells. Lee's cap is cooler looking, though...

I believe they make non-vented fuel caps for filler tubes up to 3 inches.

How do we get a transaction done for your cap? Yours is just a tad smaller than the buggy caps and bungs available.

Fuel cell stuff is a great, I had looked into that....Anything that says "fuel cell" on it is an ankle holding adventure when it comes time to pay for it! But imagine...An A boat withan Arrrr Arrrr Arrrr "fuel cell"
