Marathon Boat Question - ASR???

Hey there,
looking at picking up a ASR for closed course racing but i was tempted to run the Top O Michigan aswell.
I have my thoughts on a Fiberglass Racecraft A/B hull...
Is this something that would work for a Marathon boat too or are the to lightly built to take the beating?

What dimensions are the Racecraft vrs a more marathon suitable hull?

Don't be tempted to run Top "O", DO IT!!!!! You won't regret it, trust me.

Graham....I had a Racecraft A/B a few years ago and always thought it would be up to the rigors of the Top O. I never ran it in the Top O though. I ran another B boat for a few years but got beat up in it and went to C...a much better ride for me. Get a boat and get to the Top O this Aug. You will have the time of your life.

Topo Boats

It all comes down to the weather. Last year on Saturday it was calm and a Racecraft would have been great. Sunday a little rougher in places. A/B boats boats will beat you up in rough water because of their size. McCourtie and Austin type hulls are probably the best in big water but you will still get beat up. Racecraft's are strong little boats,as we have one and have run it in rough water before. They are great short course boats as they roll up easy which is important in the marathon. A C/D 12'+ boat will allways give you a better ride but in 3-4 footers. nothing is fun. If I can help you in any way, let me know. By the way, I have a very nice Racecraft A/B and a 12'6" sorensen 25/C/D boat for sale.

Just a little more info... Graham has an OMC A motor. So he'll get beat up regardless of boat. Also I believe he wants the boat for casual closed course racing 90% of the time... with the intention of trying a marathon or two for fun. Sounds like if he throws in a big tank and lots of padding, then go for it, the boat will hold together?

Hi Bob.... Yes it's Robs old boat, 2001 Sorensen, perfect condition, like when I got it from 2 years ago. My back keeps getting worse, so I wont be raceing this year. Who ever buys it should put gas in it. Other than that its ready to go. $1600.

The pics are me in my brand new Racecraft at Constantine in some rough stuff. I have and still would put a Racecraft thru anything anyone else would in a wooden rig, no doubt about it! The boat pictured above is the newest carbon fiber available, hands down stronger than any luan ply. It was built for me but now belongs to Terry and I have his Racecraft because of weight issus, he grew out of his and Ponch made my new one too light. The bouncy sequence shots are a result of choppy water and not letting out of the throttle when I got out of shape, not a boat craftmanship or quality issue. If I had to go into battle in an A or B runabout, it would be in a Racecraft... Greg Lyons 18P

Is there any changes over the years on the Racecraft hulls? Shape, length, chine? or is it mainly a change of materials used...

Looking at primarily fiberglass hulls as they are cheaper

So, i guess the next question would be, how much fuel is needed to run the Top O???
What other mods would, should be done to a hull or outfit to run the Top O or any other marathon for that matter.

Graham, I suggest you get a hold of Kim Park. They can tell you what it is all about. I believe Jamie ran A a couple of years up there, they might even still have a boat or two. I know he's got a garage full of them. Talking to Butch about that race, it really comes down to weather. If the weather is good, the light short course boats do well, if not the boats made for that race do well. You could also contact Butch, I know he has one A boat, the one that Stevie was driving. He'd probably even let you use the boat if you committed to the race for sure. From what I hear it is a great race, you won't regret it. It tests man and machine.
