    Marathon gas tanks

Graham... My son used 2.2 gal. in his A boat last year and that was wide open all the way. If you carried 3 gal. that should be plenty. There is plenty of room under the side decks on our Racecraft which is where our tank is mounted.

Cool your trying to run Top'O as well as ASR closed course. There was a thread on this site a while back regarding fuel capacity for Top'O. I have attached the link.
Last year at Grass lake we had a racecraft compete in the marithon in "A" class. Kicked everyones butt in "A" class by a full lap. The down side was he had NO gas after going to the scales and new he could not race on Sunday with a clock start and finish the race without running out of fuel. However, Grass lake and Big Rapids are no way close to the riggors of Top'O. Last years calm day is not typical. I also would have reserve of using too lite a hull in 4' waves as your going to get beat up. Sometimes the extra weight helps you slice thru the waves. This is just from observation of watching the different classes compete and helping our son race "A" class there. Hope to see you there this year.

Great - So. Racecraft Fiberglass ASR with 3 gals of fuel and a driver - aside from the prospect of 3- 4 foot rollers, how is this for the general rough water...will they go over most of it or are you going to stuff most of it???

        Thanks

          Stuff ?

Graham - Maybe before you set your eyes running a racecraft at Top'O you should talk with the people that race and build them and get thier input. I don't think anyone that has run that race hasn't stuffed at one time or another or been in the drink. The Austines and McCourties boats run awsome up there as well as some Canadian built Everett hulls. Do some calling around and talk with these people. If you need phone #'s I'm sure people can help you out here. Most runabout racers own a hull to race closed course and one for marathon racing. There are a few used "A" marathon boats that are available to run that race with, for your first time, if you want to try before you buy. Give Mike Afholter a call and see what's available to use next year. He also is the head of the marathon series in this part of the country. If you need his # just PM me.

Oh, I'm not afraid of going in the drink, done that lots!!!
ASH is no fun in big water either!! Crashed twice in one heat and still finished the heat!
Primarily i'm looking for a closed course boat as i don't intend on running Top O every year, of course, I say that now!?
If i love it and want to keep doing it, i'd consider a true marathon hull to keep in the garage...
I also have to learn how to turn right!!!!

Plenty of padding, I use 2" on the floorboards. 1" on the cockpit sides. Also some kind of automatic drain for the transom.

Does anyone use a camel back kind of thing? Or is plenty of water forced down your throat?! HAHAHA

Do you take a small tool kit with you? Spare prop? Extra underwear?

Don't bother with a water bottle. You will not have time to drink anything, unless you break down. Then I'm sure you'll find a spectator or tow boat driver offering you something.

Keep the tools to a minimum. As for me, I took only a prop wrench with a shear pin duct taped to it. Maybe that was a little too minimal.

Engine preparation: Loctite EVERYTHING. (blue not red)

It's good to gather as much information as you can in advance. But don't sweat it too much. Go do it and have fun! As for myself: Just racing the Top O' was the most exciting thing I've ever done.

I like the camel back idea...I do that on long motorcycle trips...
padding is a good call...I was also thinking of wearing full hockey skin and elbow pads...

I wouldn't bother with that as Jeff said you won't have time and if its rough you will have plenty of fresh water.
