The currernt Modified Outboard Rule is unintelligible. If the rule has to be explained for people to understand it, then it is not a good rule. I think that's what Mr. Huson is indirectly suggesting with the comment about templates.
When any rule is eventually adopted, and I think it should be, that rule should be uniform across SO, MOD and PRO. Additionally, there should be an exemption from the requirement if the the pickleforks are collapsible or break-away ones.
Finally, why are runabouts not included in the rule?
I thought the same thing when I read the rule. I also agree with your comment on collapsible or break-away pickleforks. I can't figure out why they didn't just copy the UIM rule. It's been a while since I read it, but I remember it as being much more simply written, and it also gives specs. for break-away pickles.
Scott, if you mean drive open cockpit probably a larger percentage than
APBA,125,175,250,350 osy 400 are all open cockpit 500 and 700 are capsules just like APBA,I don't know much about any other classes.
It really doesn’t matter what the percentage is, the advantage of having rounded off tips protects all drivers across the board. Why do you think OPC made it mandatory, its funny how kneel down racers are clearly the most vulnerable with the least amount of protection yet put up the most resistance

Dan,
Neither are good choices, but I am not sure that I want more surface area striking me than less (considering a blow to the helmet). I might prefer more surface area to the body. I do not see a reason for pointed sponson tip other than it is pleasing to the eye and may be easier from a construction standpoint.
I am resistant to some changes or proposed changes, because the changes are made without real "study".
I do agree that we are resistant to changes. As has been said before, awarenes of our vunerability should be the factor that makes us drive most sensibily.

Lets hope this constant resistance to change does not manifest it self in the form of an ugly tragedy.
The new UIM rule for pickle forks for 2008.
2" round radius minimum, 1" in one direction,( 1/2 of a 2" ball)
1" minimum thickness at inner sponsom,
1/2" minimum thickness at outer deck line,
It is hard to have 1"or 3/4" at outer deck
line with some boat designs.
Alum rails is for boats of the 50's and 60's design
I think runabout should have 2" round fronts too,
What ever rule we come up with it should be
unifoam across SO,MOD,PRO,
The UIM rule is a good one to follow.
Most if not all the new PRO boats have rounded pickles and reinforced cockpits and it seems like most of the guys are trying to follow the UIM recomendations so they are legal for the Worlds.
I do know that at last years meeting we discussed this and the 3 chairs wanted to make a uniform rule that all 3 catagories could adopt. We will hear more about it in Detroit.

Here are pictures of my two boats. When I built them '06 & '07 I wasn't making them to conform to any dimention, just rounded them. The 1" piece of boat padding is for size reference.

Looks good Darrell would you mind filling us in on the recent Nor Cal 400 Incident
I borrowed this picture of Ted's boat from the Utman collection. We were at Carelton Place Ontario many moons ago when this happened. There was a huge debate back then on cockpit sides and points. My new boat has reinforced cockpit sides and rounded pickles and we are rounding the pickles on our flyer. When we pick up our CSR it will probably get changed to round or duckbill.
