I think I may be addicted to Train Wreck scenarios because I watched the Daytona race (?) to the bitter end. Danica got taken out at 1+ laps, but her crew managed to redo her car and get her back on the track. And the race went on until . . . Juan Pablo Montoya lost control and pasted a dryer truck full of jet fuel on a caution lap! *WHOOSH*
I'm sure the track fire fighters are trained and have the right stuff to snuff a fire involving a few gallons of gasoline, and they demonstrate that skill often. But it was apparent they have no experience with Jet-A fuel, and from what I saw are not equipped with the right agent to snuff Jet-A fires. What they needed was the E-1 Titan crash truck I operate at the airport. 1500 gallons of water, bumper turret & roof turret capable of dispensing a 3% mix of water and AFFF (triple F foam). That rig would have knocked the flames out in a couple minutes - amazing brew.
Then again, who expected an errant race car to destroy a track dryer truck on a caution lap? Bizarre to say the least. But to paraphrase Murphy's Law, If it can go wrong, sooner or it will go wrong.
A thrilling start to the racing season! Spectacular!
