  • NASCAR = Train Wreck

I think I may be addicted to Train Wreck scenarios because I watched the Daytona race (?) to the bitter end. Danica got taken out at 1+ laps, but her crew managed to redo her car and get her back on the track. And the race went on until . . . Juan Pablo Montoya lost control and pasted a dryer truck full of jet fuel on a caution lap! *WHOOSH*

I'm sure the track fire fighters are trained and have the right stuff to snuff a fire involving a few gallons of gasoline, and they demonstrate that skill often. But it was apparent they have no experience with Jet-A fuel, and from what I saw are not equipped with the right agent to snuff Jet-A fires. What they needed was the E-1 Titan crash truck I operate at the airport. 1500 gallons of water, bumper turret & roof turret capable of dispensing a 3% mix of water and AFFF (triple F foam). That rig would have knocked the flames out in a couple minutes - amazing brew.

Then again, who expected an errant race car to destroy a track dryer truck on a caution lap? Bizarre to say the least. But to paraphrase Murphy's Law, If it can go wrong, sooner or it will go wrong.

A thrilling start to the racing season! Spectacular!

What was even more was that the dryer was at the top of the track and the burning fuel ran down the banking, flaming the entire width of the track

One of those perfect storm accidents

      B.) Freak Accident...Juan in a million...
C.) How many columbians does it take to stop Daytona 500? Only Juan!!

Only making fun, Juan was a passenger when the rear end locked up, wasn't his fault... But it will be great late nite fodder for Leno tonight...

Did you hear for sure it was the rear end? The sparks started flying from the right front to mid car.

Nothing about the cause at NASCAR.com this morning either.

Supposedly something in the drive line locked up and that locked up the rear wheels. Once that happens the back end breaks loose and you are a spectator, the back end is going to pass the front end.....

Could have been anything between the clutch and the rear wheels. He came in and they were trying to figure out what was causing a heavy vibration. Often big vibrations are in the driveshaft, but that's just speculation. They have big catch hoops around the driveshaft, but if it didn't work right could easily have casused what we saw....

They sent him back out and something locked up.... I was referring to the rear end in that it was the rear wheels supposedly locked up, not necessarily the third member... Matters not what broke, only that the driveline locked up...

You need to look closer at the video. The 42 veers right then the tires lock up, and the sparks come from the front of the car at first.

So no, you didn't hear any more than I have, you're speculating too.

If it did fail in the front end it will be hard to diagnose the failure, the cars front end is destroyed.

We're all speculating, it doesn't matter... The car turned, it wasn't his fault. That's all I was trying to say.
