I'm sure these teams have been doing this for years but still ....... I think you are walking on thin ice
Guy's I was there for the races. Yes the Ice was two feet thick on that lake. Just a bit farther from shore. This happened on Detroit lake. Which is located in the town of Detroit lakes MN. It is 250 miles north of St.Paul / Minneapolis. To answered the question of why they parked on the ice when the shore was so close by. That was where the organizers of the race wanted them to park and there is not much room there between the highway and the shore. Maybe 20 feet at most. It just happened to warm up more than normal for that time of year. The trailers fell though during the night.

1 - Don't stop or park closer than 100 yards to the shore because the ice is the weakest in that area.

2 - Don't park a lot of vehicles close to each other, the combined weight will be too much for even very thick ice!

3 - After March 1st, you're better off staying off the ice with any vehicle larger than a snowmobile, better off yet use a pair of skis!

Why do the "Ice Road Truckers" stay away from each other! Proof is in the picture! Wonder what these Geniuses think now!

          all are correct

We had several places we parked on the Ice, Raber bay, Mackinaw, Bay Mills, I think the problem was how close to shore they parked, as has been stated the ice is not as thick closer to shore, plus the warm up, and also as has been stated alot of time there is no place to park but on the ice, there are plastic covers to put on the skis but the studs still get messed up if they run over gravel and stuff. Not sure how to keep this from happening but it is pretty common out this way to drive and park on the lakes once they get frozen, just one of those things, sometimes you eat bear, sometimes bear eats you. We had a truck go through Burt lake a few weeks ago, parked or stopped where two pressure cracks came together, there was 18" of good ice, front dropped throught then the rest of the truck, 30' of water, nobody hurt but a couple of stained shorts. What a mess though, I wonder if this has ever happend before, we used to have alot of ice festivals back in the 70-80's and I can remember water comming up throught the ice by the second day from all the weight sinking the ice.
