Why would you park on the ice when the land is so close. I thought boat racers were nuts!!
Wonder if people were sleeping in the motor home?
I'm also a bit lost on this one the dry land was just a few feet away and everyone parked on the lake Why in the hell would you park a 6 ton motor home - trailer on a sheet of ice????????
Why in the HELL is there still a truck out on the ice in the background of those shots, when there are so many rigs that already fell through ? Seems kind of moronic to me.
Warm weather overnight and all the weight confined to a very small space was the cause. The rest of the lake had well over 2 feet of ice on it. Steve is right, this was in MN. If memory serves me correctly, that race was in mid to late March.
Been There Done That, never sank or went through! Although, being born & raised in the Land of 10,000 Lakes I apparently learned from some old timers that:
1 - Don't stop or park closer than 100 yards to the shore because the ice is the weakest in that area.
2 - Don't park a lot of vehicles close to each other, the combined weight will be too much for even very thick ice!
3 - After March 1st, you're better off staying off the ice with any vehicle larger than a snowmobile, better off yet use a pair of skis!
Why do the "Ice Road Truckers" stay away from each other! Proof is in the picture! Wonder what these Geniuses think now!
Well, there are few reasons for them to park on the ice, as you can see not much snow or ice on the beach, if you have ever ice raced you know the runners are sharpened to razor sharp, anything but ice dulls them, so the closer to the ice the less chance of dulling the runners, and human nature being lazyness prevails, eassier to park on the ice, not usualy a problem but as you can see, ooooops, sometimes sh-------- happens

Sorry Kerry regardless of the fact if I never spent a second of my life in or around this particular sport I can look at some of the broken ice pieces and tell they never had a chance with that much weight spread across what appears to be very thin ice. One post said the ice is usually 2 feet thick, look at some of those broken pieces of ice and you be the judge two feet think
I'm sure these teams have been doing this for years but still ....... I think you are walking on thin ice
