I didn't say that I can't get up to a 1/2, I can. But some others can't. I don't run it up at 1/2 though, because it isn't worth smoking a motor. 5/16 seems to run just as good for me and my wallet feels safer.

102 vs 302
I remember being told the the Yamato 102 would never compete
with a Mercury "C" motor back when they were made a legal as a
"C" class engine. We are a very innovative and motivated group
of individuals who will not stop until we find a way to make the
302 work.....and we have those individuals among us right now
that have shown that they WILL work with a little bit of effort,
be it with propellers, boat design or whatever else it takes to make
them competitive. Let's not allow the "powers that be" legislate,
let's put the innovation in "us" to motivate us to bring parity in
the class. I may be considered by some to be an outsider but it
with this looking at things from the outside and knowing what it
is like to be legislated out of a ride or two that has gotten me to
come out of the closet so to speak. Don't let others determine your
fate drivers......put it in your own hands and take care of business
with what you have at your disposal.
Thanx,
Ron

Hey Jerry,
Looks like the Chairman got hold of a 302 powered CSH to run at the nationals next year. Needs a little advantage like in 25 SSR.Lou Letwenski

Up here at our Canadian races the fastest CSH seems to be Chris Mizener out of NY with his Y302. He even got 2nd on the big course at Whitney Point. So I see the Y302 becoming more and more competitive each year. With boat modifications and prop work, us Y302 drivers will be in the hunt soon enough. The only thing I would like to see changed is to allow the external water pick-up so we don't fry an engine. It is in the best interest of CSH and 20ssh to allow this so the parts aren't used up so fast because of overheating.
I was talking to Mitch Myer at the Clayton Boat show this year and he was kicking himself in the butt for not keeping all the 20H parts he's replace each year, that are now so hard to come by. Well if the best CSH guys are freshening up their motors each year because one season of heating the motor calls for the freshening up how long is the Y302 parts going to last?
I say keep the min weight and the height rule, don't give the Y302 anything, but let the Yamatos run this external water pick-up so we're not scrambling for parts in 5 years for the Y302Spencer Utman #16CE

I believe that it will pump above 1/2". Some of the testing that Mike Pavlick and I did this summer allowed me to get to 1/2" without the boat steaming at the end. It is props and motor placement that is important.
I think Sam Hemp talked about getting above a 1/2" without a problem. It is just that the 302 does not have the top end, so he knows a 302 is at a disadvantage at a large nationals course and that is why Billy runs 102s.

One thing to keep in mind is if you run and external pick up ae a speedo pick up into the back of your 302. This will not help your speed. This may slow you down some. We were at Brinkmans testing and tried this. Our keller speedo in and a gps reading to see how accurate the keller was. Then pulled the keller pick up. Gps showed a solid mile per hour faster. Remember we are trying to make the 302 faster not slower. Just a thought. Mikemike ross

Good advice Mike, I never thought that something so small would make such a difference. but then again the skid fin can have sort of the same effect. But for those who are running well below the limit, running the external pick-up may still help them. For discussion purposes, lets say racer xyz is running 3/4" under the bottom out of fear that their motor might get hot, that racer could run at the height limit and gain 2-3mph by running an external water pick-up, yet lose 1 of those mph to the external water pick-up. I don't think we should make it mandatory for every Yamato to run a water pick-up (just like the yamatos can run a gas tank on top of the engine or a fuel pump), but for those who can't run at the limit and see an improvement with the external water pick-up allow them to do this.
As for my opinion leave the class alone besides the water pick-up. Wait another year or two to see if the Y302 gets anymore competitive. It's all in prop development from here on out and right now we're still in the beginning stages on the east coast (from my observations).Spencer Utman #16CE

Wonder what would happen if I used the turn fin as a water pickup.
Lets go back to 1991 or so and the C21 hydro cannot get water to the 302 above 3/4". I think gee a external water pick-up might help. So I go to the SORC and request a rule change. Do any of you on this board who were around about that time believe that it would even have been moved and seconded for discussion. NOT!!! but of course there where not that many 302's running and the 102 racers were very concerned that their 102's were going to become anchors. I gave up on the 302 on the hydro. So we bought a Bezot and a 102 and became the CSH in Region 11 to beat. We now run the 302's on the runabout and it does real well.
Gary Lewis, Mike kelly, and Kyle Bahl do real well with the 302 on the Dawe/Hemp and Bezots. I think bottom design has a lot to do with how high you can run. Fact is I know it does.bill b
