I bought a 302 awhile back...We put it on a 1970 Hill Runabout, my 17 year old drove it....He ain't POLISH..but his first three laps around the course, he went backward... When he came in, I just said, "How was it?" He said, "Cool....then added, did I go the wrong way?" We race two heats and the Marathon.
Broc, my youngest, had raced J, once, then Water Polo took control of his life....He was all CIF (All State) as a junior, but 5 1/2 hours a day of smimming burned him down...
We own four 45 SS rigs, but Broc wants to race some keel downs....Ernie Dawe gave us Steven's C hydro...but I can't figure how high I can run on Steven's boat without burning up a perfectly good Yamato 302....
Darrell Sorensen said lower the transom heights....iN 1976, AT THE APBA NATIONAL MEETING I WAS LAUGHED OUT OF THE SORC MEETING FOR SUGGESTING TRANSOM HEIGHTS.....
We just won the Blue Water Casino 300, we could go 83 mph in a 20 foot boat. Last year we could go 87 in this boat. We ran in a different class, this year, but the difference between 83 and 87 in a 20 foot hull, to me, we the difference between my son being KILLEd and my son being able to drive the boat.
I raced AU for May 1955 until March 1958. I won most of the AU rades I ran, at 42 1/2 MPH....22 inch bottom.
If the transom height was lowered to 1" for all Yamatoes...I'd think they'd get water.
If you want to run Nose Cones, I pay my foundry by the pound for parts, a Yamato Nose Cone would cost about 25 bucks....I'll buy the mold... BUT, even with a NOSE CONE, I'd still like to see the height lowered...
Speed is the worst thing going for kneeldown racing...slow them down and the sport will grow...
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the length of the straightaways at Depue?
Ryan,
Using Google Earth, I would estimate that the length of the straightaways that we use for the Stock/Mod races at DePue are .28 to .30 mile long. I think the PRO's use a very simlar size course.
As mentioned before 302's in the west have been the dominate motor in most yamato classes.
I won the western divisionals in CSR and CSH with a 302.
Finished 2nd in CSR at nationals and 6th in CSH with a 302 this year.
At any given weekend out here there are about 5 to 6 racers if not more that can win in any yamato classes. The 302 is still reletivly new, given more time and more racers with 302's it will be soon were a 302 will win a stock nationals.

"He didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you, he rubbed you, and rubbin' son is racin'!"
I have been reading this post for some time now trying to see everyone's point. I am a loyal CSH driver that has always run a 302. I would think of myself as being the first or atleast one of the first to run a 302 on a Hydro in the northeast. I will now give everyone my opinion...like Scott say's leave it alone. I am able to cool my 302 at the 1/2" mark. Did this take some time to accomplish you bet but this is racing. I feel confident that I have a chance on any given weekend. The 302 just needs some time and commitent. I am sure when the 102 came out it was not running as fast as it is today. So again being a 302 owner and racer I believe that things are fine the way they are.
The guys that Ed and folks are saying need a little help to make them competitive are saying "no we don't". This may be the first time racers have turned down a chance to gain an advantage. Hats off to the 302 guys. Tony

with what Kyle (and some of the other 302 owners) have stated, that should be enough to put an end to the "suggested 302 water pickup modifications".....
Kyle, I think your success in the CSR is more due to that beautiful new boat you got. John 2-Z
Let's hope he keeps it beautiful for a little while longer then he normally does.
I agree with others, let's end this discussion and leave things as is. Even though selfishly, I (we, my son's and I) would be happy with any assistance anyone would like to propose for the 302.
Hey,
I've heard a handfull of fellow racers/builders say that they have from one time or another made the 302 work at 1/2" and higher.............
How about bringing the rest of us struggling 302 racer's up to speeeeeed?!!..............Help the 302...........
Seems it would be the easiest way to calm this storm..........?
Or is this info so ...GUARDED.... that if told, you would have to "KILL" any resipiant?
So far the things that I've heard/learned that help are:
1.Transum angle/set-back that puts the front/leading edge of gearfoot 8 inches from bottom of transum...........?
2. Afterplane attached to rear of transum that comes close to r/h side of foot to deflect water from rear of rig to pick-up/exhaust snout?
3. Speedo pick-up/steer fin pick-up with water tube pointed/positioned to spray exhaust snout?
4. A rig that airs-out well so you can stay at 3/4" and still pump...?
5. Known prop design(s) and/or serial numbers from builders that work..?
6. How you route the water tubes from motor.....
7. Tunneled bottom----would this keep the rear of rig deeper/less aired-out so 1/2"depth will work? (Seems to help MOD rigs were you can run at-0")
Would a non-tunneled rig aired out at 3/4" be faster than tunneled rig at 1/2"??---hummm---Silvestri's was fast without tunnel at more depth....
I have been through this balanceing act with my 25MOD and the lift in the merc foot........In that class the tunneled rigs with the prop shaft at-0 seem faster or at least handle better for lap time, than a flat bottom at 3/8".......
Yep---gonna take some time/testing to find that ---Magic set-up.....
---any other ....Thoughts........time and frustration saving tips? (That is the POINT of this thread/site....right?)
(hold your best hand but .....)
Not asking for championship set-up, just some help/clues/tips/ETC.......
Weather permitting, I'm going to work with all the above next weekend at Oil City "Fun Run"........Unless the 12-18 inches of snow we got the last week sticks around......snowmobile suits and water don't go together ...WELL.
