    How I was raised

(just trying to lighten the mood here guys)

My mother was a Catholic, my father was a Baptist, and so I spent half my time in the Catholic Church and half my time in the Baptist church.

So that makes me half Catholic, half Baptist, or as you might say, a Cactus.

      Attractive

The sport must be attractive to newcomers or they will seek something else to do.

Some good books to read are:

How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie (oh, I better read that one again.)

25 ways to win with people by John C. Maxwell & Les Parrott (oh, I better read that one again too.)

Lets think how we could make the sport attractive. I have some Ideas. I will mull them over and report later.

It is kind of like boy girl relationships. If the girl(or guy) is more attracted to someone else, she(or he) will leave and go with the more attractive one. If not physically, then mentally.

So common sence says we guys (or gals) should be working on ourselves to be more attractive to our other half.

We could look at it from the negative side. What repells people? Then do the opposite.

Does not seam like rocket science.

            Dating?

All religious talk and philosphy aside you both bring up a good point. There are a number of optionsand a lot of competition for the recreational dollar.

Boat Racers have to be better fishers.

That will come with fewer classes, a short program attractive and comprehendable to a spectator, available equipment and racers selling the sport (setting the hook).

The task at hand can be overcome, but it won't be overnight and it won't done by turning people off to our sport through beating each other up on a site like this. This forum is a great tool to get and voice opinions. Focus your energy on making our sport and forums like this better and more useful.

              Question

Why can't classes that are only 10 MPH apart from one another run together?

I know safety was an issue, like you would not run an 80MPH boat on the same water as a 55MPH boat, but could it be considered if the spread was only X apart, that they could not run together?

                Give a little...

uh oh . . . Ive done bad things too. But must I list them here for all to see?
It's MY secret! and Im not tellin anyone...

But I did bring a few new racers in over the last few years.
I used the same technique that Steve Johnson used to get me in here.
                "test drive"

Yes gentlemen - A Saturday night test drive after the races. You're rig is still set up... Pull out all yer height sticks and give that guy (who pits with you for at least 1/2 day) his first ride and see what happens.

Ive seen very few guys do this, but the ones that do: kudo's to you!

So what you are saying is for example if there wasn't a huge turn out at a race run A,B and C together all in one race. As the racers cross the finish line score them seperately. Your idea is an effort to shorten the days. Is that what your concept is or am I reading way to deep into this?

Racer X, exactly. And, it is insurable, and safe, because that is what NBRA does.

It reminds me of the Family/Sport J days, when all boats were allowed out on the water to test at one time before the classes began.

The issue we have in Region 12, is simply, water time. Longbeach for example, developed as a Marine Stadium in the 30's only allows racing from 9-5, or 10-6 or some idiocy as that.

So, Ross found a way to add J classes into the inboards, why could not A, 20SS and C be run at the same time? Sure, you have some drivers running all or both classes now, but this is a way for those who only run one class to be able to run .

I love Kips idea of lowering a motor and giving your pit guy a run, however, here, the second racing is done, the ambulance and divers are sent home, so, no can do. Also, for testing, some rule about using the river at Parker where you get fined after the races have ended...

                    Great idea though.

I have been subjected to Racer X's totally out of line comments for longer than I thought I could. This person needs some hepl. He is offending everyone and seems to enjoy it. I feel sorry for him. It's a shame to waste one's life being so disruptive. I recommend that he find a new sport and leave us semi-normal human beings alone.

You need to see Longbeach....Don't care about the other stuff, but, some strip club sponsors a Cracker Box, and they have "models" escorting drivers all over the pits.

I remember last year, KT's first boat upside down in the driveway...Dad's who were over 50 knew exactly what it was and asked where races are held. A few have driven to see her race.

Kids in the hood, on the other hand....Asked me if it was a large model of the Starship Enterprise.....That connects to what I have seen in the schools. The degradation and dumbing down of the kids. No wood shop, no metal shop, no training about the real world or life. Just computer garbage and lessons on skate boarding. Someone posted about a kid who took a hydro to class a while ago....How about developing National "Take your hydro to school week?"

It would click in to physics and science classes very well. It would also work for algebra, and calculus classes, how the water and air work to lift the boat...Etc Etc....

Ah, but really. There ARE ways around that. We've all heard of it.
I've heard it called Un-Insured Testing...
And we dont need to freak out about it.
                              • Sign a small waiver with your tenative pit guy - soon to be boat racer.
                              • He goes out by himself. You go out in the safety boat to be there if needed. And my gosh... if you made him pit for you for a better part of the day already, you'd know by days end if the dude is mechanicly inclinded enough to handle it.
                              • Of course you'd also be sure the guy had a job just in case he did drive it up on the beach.
I believe this is the safest, most logical way to get someone their first ride. But then there are those who treat their raceboat as if it were made from gold and irreplacable.... I've had more damge done to my equipment from borrowing to a fellow boat racer, than I ever have giving a newbie a ride!

I have to agree with Kip on this one, my very first time in a race boat was in the late 70's when former Champ Boat driver Harry Davis of region 4 saw me standing on the shoreline with that look in my eye. I remember the day like it was yesterday when Harry approached me and asked if I wanted to take his Champ Boat for a spin, needless to say back in those days folks didn't worry about law suits etc. and yes they were simpler times but the same theory still applies today.

Long story made short Harry suited me up * NO KEVLARS late 70's * just my summer shorts and a t-shirt and of course life jacket and helmet the rest was history mind you I was only about 16 years old and the boat was a full blown champ rig that Harry raced the very next weekend in the Pittsburgh three rivers regatta along side the likes of Renato Molinari and other V-8's from Europe.
