When running the tohatsu in D mod with the prop shaft 1/2 inch below bottom to level the boat handled fine.
I think the stock commision should make the tohatsu a d stock division 2 run with the mercurys and scored separtly. With the same rules of high and weights. Russ Bircher 45R/151R
I would like to see the different data you have to regards to rpm vs speed at your experence running at these different set-up on these different hull. At these different hight did the speed were the same 70-80 miles an hour. Was there a different between hight rake and round ears prop in the handling at different hights. 2 question. Why and how you combine a so call division 2 or scoring how many div 2 boat would you regerister to make a class able for points. or even better for records?????. I agree with you that both motore should run under the same set of rules and the best set-up and driver should be allowed to compett on one set of rules. are the current members remaining the same or are they getting replaced for next season? What decisions have been made during this season concerning the NEW Tohatsu and the competitiveness of it, running with the 44XS. (and yes, I am a Merc technician, so you can see I am not one sided towards the NEW motor, but am looking towards the future and the Merc has ran its course..........no pun intended!).

Good Post. It sounds like we need more results from actual race conditions.

2nd. Wasn't the Tohatsu brought in to help "revive" the d class? If yes, WHY make another class. If that is the case lets add a few more 350H classes so I can run my (same boat and motor) 18 heats a day like some of the stock classes. Another class is not the answer in my opinion, just make it fit into the d class. They have done it before, and I'm sure they will get it done again, but it won't happen overnight. So, give them good information in actual race conditions and go from there.

The Tohatsu is a great motor. But I totally agree that at the current 1 inch rule in can be unsafe as the boats start doing the funky cold madina and is all over the place. And don't blame it on the lower units, because we run the Bass Lower units under the mod motor with Great success. Just my 2 cents, now flame away.......

I have a 44XS and a Tohatsu motor for D-Stock. I have run both motors on the same boat with the same props and had a difference of .5 MPH only. I have the first Tohatsu motor put out by Bass Machines. I ran and helped promote the motor because I saw it as the future of D-Stock class. I have raced the Tohatsu for three years now and belive it is competive with the 44XS but, it has not blown it out of the water. I have lost more races to the 44XS than I have won. I have gained more speed with a new boat this year to become more competative with the top boats of the region. At the AOF nationals in September, 2006 Todd Craigen won the first heat because of a better start over J. Michael Kelly and myself. Once Todd had the lead no one could catch him. J. Michael and I were both runing the Tohatsu. I heat two Todd had a mishap taking him out of the race. My point being that who ever got the best start was going to be the winer of the heat. Showing that there is parity of the motors. I do not think starting a new class for the Tohatsu is the answer. Removing the restictions and letting the motor run as an equal is a better solution for the class. I did not race APBA this year because of the restrictions put on the Tohatsu. I did race all of the AOF races in the region because, there are no restrictions on the motor. I would love to return to racing APBA races if they would remove the restictions. As far as the reeds go, I have raced with both and feel that the stock reeds when they are new give better performance then the Boysen reeds. When Sid and I put the Boysen reeds in the Tohatsu it was because the stock reeds were getting weak and the performance of the motor was going away. We also thought that the Boysen reeds would last longer and if one did break it would not eat up the motor!

            ...another D class?????!!!!!

We need A N O T H E R class in APBA racing like Ford needed the Edsel fer cripesakes. It's almost as bad as the Olympics and 'Ball Room Dancing'!!!

APBA aint NASCAR. We ( you me and anybody else who's an APBA member ) need to quit trying to level the playing field. When I go to the races I want to see color, a variation in equipment competing in a class, and I want to hear some freaking NOISE and see some akshunn. Watching only three or four boats run with the same doggone motor hung on the back can be pretty boring from a spectator (potential apba member ) standpoint.... unless somebody like Giles, Luce, or Allen are mixing it up. Take a look around at some of the wore out, welded up, hard to find stock parts for, 'stuff' that's running out there in the stock classes - parts support is what?? Errr except for Yahhh maahhh toes - there seems to be parts and support for them.....but, they don't even look like any 'stock' outboard motor. Who on the street is going to relate to those things and want to get into racing?
