  • Celebrating the Life of Travis Pond

Two quick stories followed by some pictures. I invite others to share their stories and photos as well.

At Curwensville, PA this year the race was on hold because of high wind. Travis and some others passed the time by riding up and down the dirt road on a bicycle typically taking the trip downhill as fast as their legs could peddle. On one of his uphill passes I stopped him and explained that I had signed up Luke, my youngest son, to race in the J category and that Luke had requested #24 as boat number because that was the day of the month he was born. So I’m telling the story to Travis that I had to explain to Luke that no, he couldn’t have #24 because another racer (Travis) had that number and two racers from the same geographic region couldn’t have the same boat number. Travis pointed out that since J was a separate category from Stock Outboard Luke might actually be able to get that number. And then he smiled real big. “Or I could sell you the number”. He was still grinning as he peddled away.

Travis once beat me in CSR by paddling across the finish line. Ok, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds but here’s what happened. At Sharptown, Md in 2005 Travis was just far enough ahead of me that I didn’t see his boat quit after he went through the last turn of the race. I think I learned later he had run out of gas. So as I’m rounding the final turn my eyes are tracking the water in front of me and beyond that are the pits. And I see Gary Pond (a large target) in the pits and a couple of others waving their arms but I didn't know why. As I came out of the turn and I saw Travis’ boat sitting still I realized what they were trying to tell him: keep going, start paddling. So I crossed the finish line ahead of Travis who was now on the deck of Kevin Harrell’s CSR paddling away. And eventually he did cross the finish line under his own power and placed last in the heat. But because he finished two places ahead of me in the other heat, overall he still placed higher than I did for the race. So Travis beat me because he paddled across the finish line. Unbelievable.

As before, please note that it's graphic then ump. The word filter takes out any instance of c_u_m, even in cir***stance. See?

so it's like this, but without the _ : g_r_a_p_h_i_c_u_m_p

Right-click on the link, tell it to open in a new tab or new window. Replace *** with c u m - with no spaces. It'll load.

I'm confused. I know Travis ran ASH at Curwensville, PA on Saturday but I just assumed he was in 44E, Jimmy Parker's boat. But this looks like Travis in 4M. Is it? If so, then who was in 44E?

Michael Kench ( hope I spelled that right ) was in the 44-E ASH that weekend. The pictures you have posted are Travis.

                  Great pictures, Mark.

There are so many memories I have of Travis and of the boat races that I will cherish forever. My fondest memory of boat racing took place a few years back at Camden, N.C. Travis and I were running a heat in J Hydro, and I happened to start out front with Travis for a change. By the final lap, I was in 2nd place with the only boat in front of me being my brothers. Travis of course had half a lap on the entire field. As I approached the last turn, I realized that Travis was slowing down. He was waiting up for me. I caught up to him rounding the final pin, and when we hit the final straight-away we both held the throttle wide open and put our butts to the transon. There we were racing side be side in our George Price ”Wrong Way” and “Right Way” hydroplanes. At the time I felt as though we were the only two boats on the water. As we approached the finish line, I pulled ahead by maybe a foot and ended up winning the race. This was a big deal for me, as my brother was always my toughest competition. As we pulled into the pits, my father was raising you know what- “What were y’all doing out there, you’re gonna tear something up playing around out there like that.” Travis and I were both grinning ear to ear, we told him- “We were just racing, we had to make things a little more exciting out there.” Travis and I would go on years later telling this same story, claiming that we wanted to find out who really had the faster equipment. At the end of the story Travis would always claim that he let me win during those last few seconds. He probably did.

My brother was a down to earth, happy-go-lucky, free spirited individual, and one of the greatest boat racers I’ve ever known. He always lived his life to the fullest, on and off the race course. I am sure that he is smiling down on all of us right now. Although he is no longer with me physically, he will always be in my heart, and I know that one day we will race again. The memories that we have, and his legacy will live on forever.

Here's a pic at Camden from the past. It seems like yesterday the kids were all running J's and life was good.

I spent time with Travis at Wakefield, and there was never a dull moment when he was around. The night after Valerie Dagostino and James Luce won their national titles, some of us went to dinner at the lodge. It took them at least two hours to bring out our food, and while we waited, Travis and I passed the time by taking the straw wrappers and trying to fling them with a spoon into the glass sitting on the table. Travis got the most in and won, grinning. Just thinking of his smile and his laugh makes me smile and remember him. He was somebody to look up to, and he will be missed.

I haven't yet seen Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Who started calling Travis "Ricky Bobby" and why?

                              Dan,

Please keep this thread and the Travis Pond thread active for a little while. Gary mentioned that he hasn't had a chance to read all the posts yet and he wants to.

The pastor mentioned hydroracer.net by name in his eulogy to say that he came here to see the photos that we all posted and to read what his "other" family had to share about Travis.

And thanks for letting us use hydroracer.net the way we do. To say it's "just" a boat racing site is a severe understatement.
