Not exactly, Mike: Most of the posts I have seen that advocate keeping the Merc in A have people admitting that the Merc is at least at present NOT a dominant, competitive motor at this time, and their concern is to keep the motor in the class just so people have yet another place to run their Mercs and/or give drivers more seat time, and assure that there are enough entries to run the A Stock class where there might not normally be sufficiant entries.

If that is the case, then let 'em run...but with a parity committee's understanding that the intention going forward is to not develop the Merc as a dominant motor. Currently we let 60J's run in J, 55H's run in D, 25SS's run with the 25XS's in 25...but none of these are dominant, nor do we encourage them to be. The only difference here is that the Merc is a currently available. And therein lies the rub.

Bottom line: Let the Mercs run, but the understanding should be that the A Stock class is the home for Sidewinder, and a long goodbye for the OMC A.

I made a post earlier, but don't see it. So, if we are keeping a tally I will simply say I am of the same mind frame as Pat and others in keeping the Merc 15 in A. The sidewinder would be the motor of choice, but to keep the currently available Merc motor also.

Sean- The Merc motor is not avaliable in A stock. That's the whole debate. It was, but not this last year....Funny thing is propeller still lists the promotion for the Merc motor as a J & A motor...oops

        But Yes allow the motor.

Just to clarify, the Merc is still legal in A for the 2010 season. That ad in Propeller was supposed to be changed after last years meeting, I don't know how that got overlooked.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

            The jury is in

I told you guys I was flexible, and it looks like if I am representing the majority opinion here I'll have to vote to let the Merc in. I think Bill D makes a great point that no one really addressed, what about the guys that run 2 heats a day sitting in a kicker boat all day while the same drivers run over and over again (btw Moby Grape Racing has been as guilty as anyone). It's a tough one, because as a club we can't really afford to turn down another entry fee.

If ASR need a fourth boat I could send someone out in Colins boat--BUT it isnt easy to change motors to make the class--to switch a merc to an omc and i am not sure with a sidewinder-- its a transom bracket, kickout bracket, steering, fuel hookup--its a royal pain--i wouldnt do it. So let the merc run -- we dont really have the issue here in region 10--but there have been a few races where a-hydro and a-runabout didnt have alot of entries (rockaway) if needed we couldve sent someone out withe a merc. I believe it happened at moses lake last racing season in A runabout. let there be motor competition--the mercs are gaining speed who knows what will happen- eggs in one basket??? nah so get the kid a sidewinder when he hits the magic age!!!!!! I understand the no need to run the merc in more classes but it was legal to do so in the past and no one really did that UNLESS they were making a class--which is my point
i understand your point of view. maybe a 2 year plan like the 102 in 20?....

I got no dog in this fight as my guy drives c-stock, but seems to me that the best way to perpetuate the class is to keep as much equipment available to do so. Not everyone can go down to the corner store and afford to buy a Sidewinder for $4500. - so maybe that ole Merc, though a little slower, will help a family get into racing because it is affordable to do so - or maybe gives them a chance to see if they will like to be in racing moving forward and then upgrade to something else down the road and then sell off their used stuff to someone else. I know that if I was just getting into racing or should I see if my daughter has any inklng in a few years, I would not be able to do so at those prices.

Team 222r - soooooo.......how do you propose to perpetuate racing as a whole? My daughter is not a soccer playing girl - she loves racing. But I guarantee that if I am forced to an option of a $4500 motor (still need a boat, hardware, trailer.....) in order to do so, it won't happen. Shoot, I can buy a competitive COMPLETE 'c' outfit for the money. Only problem is, she is not near old enough to even consider that option. You're getting into dangerous territory of making racing an exclusive thing for the hardcore racer. A-class while being competitive, is also about drawing new blood into the sport - not just being a class for hardcore racers to excel.

I applaud you're passion for racing - but remember, this is where kids and their families start the journey.....

Just bought a Yamato 302 so we could continue racing in C Stock Hydro...hopefully it continues to be legal in B Stock Hydro with some restrictions. As for the Mercury, Sidewinder issue...as an American and car racing nut let the free enterprise system work. Allow all 3 motors into A Stock.

Please price out a Merc 15 for yourself, you may be surprised, (I'm guessing here but I thought another thread had one totaled up and the Merc came in at about $4,000-$4,200). So the Merc isn't really a cheaper option, it's just that it rules the J and AX classes because of it's larger displacement making good low end torque and it still has good top end (at least it does now but that another story).

The cheapset option to run all 3 would be an OMC, I've seen them from $1800-2600.
