    What a great weekend

    Big thanks to Mike and Denise Johnson, as well as the rest of the CORA for putting on a fantastic event. The cause is a great one, the course (aside from the usual river debris issues) was good, and the community and fans were awesome. I think we get so used to doing this racing thing that it is easy to forget that what we do is pretty unusual and exciting. It was great to be reminded by a large and very enthusiastic crowd that we were actually putting on a much appreciated show for them. Moby Grape Racing looks forward to Cruisin for Hope again next year.

          Big Kudos to all!

          We had a great time, and for an awesome cause. Thanks to Mike, Denise, CORA, Oregon Race Rescue and all the volunteers and racers who showed. We'll be back next year for sure. I hope they raised some money. They had scheduled, heat shutdowns to allow boat traffic to travel up and down the Willamette, and it was kinda cool watching the boats travel through. I also can't remember the last time I had to answer that many questions about racing. It was awesome. Maybe next year we can sell racing shirts and donate the proceeds back to the foundation, have a boat displayed by the waiver table for kid photo ops and have more schedules and information about racing. There were a ton of kids that got their pics taken in boats this weekend, and all the drivers & pit crew were awesome with answering questions and letting people actually get a hands on experience with the boats. Oh..and a beer garden!

            it took a lot of help...

            The Cruisin' For Hope organization provided a lot of leverage to make this event happen, and we were able piggyback on their marketing efforts. It wouldn't have happened if that hadn't really wanted a boat race.

            River courses are hard to set and pull out, and we had to clear it Saturday night and reset Sunday. I had a crack crew led by Allen Thorsen and Ken Kaiser (I really leaned hard on those two this weekend), with assists by Bill Dingman, Koell and Charlie Abell, Mark Moberly, Brian Bartlett and his buddy. 85 pound anchors at 60-80 feet.

            Milwaukie PD estimated a peak crowd (counting racers and spectators) of around 1,000 on Saturday, and we had at least that many during the day Sunday. Mari and Anya (sp?) were a huge help staffing the waiver table, with help from Jan Shaw, Sheri Greaves, Jennifer Kaiser, Randy Thurman, and others. We burned through almost 1,300 wristbands.

            I gave Bill Dingman a real chore for his first time as a Risk Manager, and he did a great job. Steve Greaves pinch-hit for an ailing Dave Anderson at Inspection. Thanks to Carl Lewis for being Carl Lewis.

            Anytime I can get Rick Sandstrom to referee, I'll take him. I lucked out and the Shaws showed up, which meant I had Howard to help out every where as well. With Tony Perman handling course control, I had an "A" team keeping the event interesting for the crowd and to keep river traffic moving (we were able to break more frequently than the hourly required by the Coast Guard).

            My wife Denise was Chief Scorer, so that was in good hands. She got help as always from Lisa Peterson, Carla Salmon, Debi Perman, Rebecca Nilsen, and the ever present Jan Shaw.

            As usual, Lee Tietze and the rest of the CORA stepped up big setting up and tearing down as usual. We are a small club of about 20 active members, and this is the second of three races in six weeks for us. No worries (well, except for getting the club trailer to Cullaby...).

            Newberg Boat Club loaned us their pontoon boat to set the course. Thanks again. Mike Bartlett with yet another overnight repair on a club motor.

            Finally, thanks to the drivers for dealing with a smaller than expected course, and a lot of debris in the water. There was a lot of good racing action for those watching. I hope you and your crews showered Sunday night.

              This race brought back some GREAT memories for me!

              This is the kind of race course I cut my teeth on way back in the late 70's and 80's Back then, dad's shop was just 100ft or so past the Bomber and I often wondered how one could put a race on there. I thought I.R.C. held a race there? I've tested there and thought if we could do kind of a "tri-oval" we could get a great course out of it. This "bullring" course was GREAT! I had many people say they never knew this kind of hydroplane racing existed. Most thought what they were seeing were just toys guy built for their kids, they had no idea that these hydro's were actually santioned to race.

              The "Cruise-in for hope" people are great and I know I made some wonderful friends in them. One of them that I was able to talk with was asking if this was all of the classes we had? I said not really, we are missing the mod engines. I mentioned I thought we had a noise issue with them is why the mod guys weren't here. He thought the pro class was great and the antique C class was neat and was wondering how much loader the mod's were over them and I said not much. He gave me his card and said if I register with his site that he would contact me and work with us to bring in the mod classes. Question: When I get a date for this planning meeting, would the C, D, mod's and FE drivers want to attend to help bring you to this race next year! I feel if a few show up to this meeting, it just might be enough to allow it to happen.

              Every year, I get the bug to bring out the D mod stuff and race again at Newberg. This Milwaukie course just might do it!!

                Don, glad to hear you are looking to get back in a boat again. And thanks for bringing your looper motors by for display, that's always a treat.

                If I may, a couple of clarifications. The sanction for Milwaukie included ALL Stock, ALL Mod, and ALL PRO. The only prohibition was on megaphone exhausts. This is not an unusual restriction when we race adjacent to residential areas; and is in fact a condition imposed by the local governments at Cullaby and Rockaway, not a choice by the conducting club or the race directors. That little black box I was holding down at the launch area Saturday was a decibel meter - we were required by permit to monitor each class. Milwaukie PD also did sound monitoring. It seemed that noise was a primary concern at this first time event.

                Of the 11 outboard races in Region 10 this season, only three have a restriction on megaphone exhausts. That restriction hasn't stopped racers in past years with chambered or stinger exhausts from racing at those events.

                CORA was the conducting APBA club for this race, so if you have requests for changes in a potential future Milwaukie sanction regarding megaphone exhausts, you might want to start there rather than with the CFH folks. Lee Tietze, the CORA commodore would be a good contact. You could even volunteer to be the race director for next year and determine what is on the sanction yourself. I'd suggest making sure your SOA, NBC, or CORA membership is up to date so that you can leverage the resources of one or more of those clubs to assist in putting the event on.

                Finally, if there are issues with racing opportunities for Mod category racers in Region 10, Daren Goehring is your most excellent Mod Commissioner and the C-Mod activity chair, JW Myers is the D-Mod activity chair, and Howard Shaw is the FE activity chair. I'm sure they would be able to address any concerns and advocate for megaphone exhausts on race sanctions if needed.
