          Dayton

I called last night, and all the 25 rooms were taken. The girl I talked to had some more rooms not on the block reserved, and she gave me the same deal on a room with 2 Queens. Lucky. take care

I see the Dayton race is going to be a record race. What qualifies a race course as a record race and has DePue ever been a record race.

                  Record Course

The course is surveyed both prior to and immediately following the race to verify the distance. The timing equipment is certified also to assure that it works correctly.

I do not remember DePue ever being a record course. For the Nationals, it would probably be a waste of effort, because of the extreme heat (little power in engines) and rough water conditions (the lake desparately need to dredged).

                    Dave,
When Outboard Club of Chicago was running the Nationals at DePue we had both a record course and a Kilo run. I remember laying the Kilo timing cable across the lake. It would have been the late '60s or start of the '70s

                      Corrected!!

Thanks Bill. I was around back then, but more interested in the carnival than the boat races!! KIlo's?? I cannot imagine that now. Hopefully the lake is dredged one day in the near future. That would allow for a more flexibility on the course layout and possibly the return of record courses.

Dave - Getting the lake dredged is a great idea , but two problems exist. First , DePue is in the state of Illinois where we can not even find a way to fund the schools in the state properly and current management (DNR) of the lake could care less if the lake is every dredged again. Lake DePue would be in much better shape if the job had been done right the first time , but before the dredging even started almost half of the funding was taken away for " OTHER PROJECTS" , Yea right , in the state. The original plan was to bring the dredge up-river and start at the mouth and do the whole lake I believe to a depth of 20 feet. The lake would have lasted a lot longer then it has if that would have happened. Instead they pretty much did just the race course and that was it. It was quick fix and it has lasted around 25 years now , but if there is ever have a dry year the races would be in trouble.

Second , the Lake is also part of the superfund clean-up project that is on-going with the two factories that were in town. So in order to get it dredged again there is alot of government red tape that need to be taken care of. The word is the money is there to do it , but only time will tell if it will ever be done and done properly.

I worry that we are getting close to year where it will be too shallow.
