Well as our drivers and crews of the USTS prepare to call it a season and begin the rebuilding and the search for that one more MPH for our 2016 season everyone can optimistic. We will celebrate the USTS 2015 Season in a few weeks in Chicago as we present our National point championship awards November 7th.
The season had its ups and downs with weather in Florida and as at Depue we were blown out on Sunday and we had to finish the Nationals at Pleasant Prairie. Our thanks to the The Depue Men's Club for their hard work and support over the years and we look forward to a great year in 2016 with our Nationals with Men's Club at Depue.
Champions have been crowned and runner-ups are looking for that advantage for next year with a new prop, new boat, a little change in this part of the air trap or another.
A couple of our Stalwarts in the USTS had a great season and capped it off with even more opportunities for us to collect our breath at their accomplishments.
At the end of the year, Andrew Thirlby and Derek Gesler headed west to Washington and Oregon to try to set records in their runabouts.
As the racing came about at Yelm, Jamie Nilsen in his home state of Washington was ready to do battle for a record. This after having come to Depue to take the 350H championship in the USTS Nationals and continued a wonderful year setting a record in for the 1 mile course at Yelm in APBA Congrats to you Jamie.
As Andrew and Derek prepared for battle in the big runabouts of 500/700/1100 runabouts, both of these young men had won championships already and now set their sights on not only competition records but APBA speed straight line records as well.
Andrew set the record at over 83 in completion and we congratulate him for a well done year as he celebrates both championships and records. He ran over the record in 1100R as well but unfortunately it was not a legal heat and did not count.
He then set a 1/4 mile record of 99MPH in 700 to complete a great couple of weeks out west for Andrew. Great job young man!!!
Have to tell a story about Andrew. Andrew had been running the 125r class for sometime, but down at Kingston, Poppa Mike put him in a 500R and sent him out for his first ride. He came back in after a couple of laps and shut it off and had a conversation with his Dad that went something like, You are *Y(^*%^% crazy to run that fast. Poppa Mike smiled and sent him back out again and the rest is history as Andrew won 4 championships that year and a couple more this year along the way. Way to go Andrew.
Derek in a boat of his own build was ready to head down the coast to put a record on the 500R that confirmed my comments as I have announced them as 500R rockets. He went through the trap at over 102MPH setting the record for these true rockets. This is so much fun to see this young man who has built quite a following amongst our fans wherever the USTS is racing.
Derek also tried in the 1100R, but the water turned ugly and was not able to get the speed because of it. He did go through at 102+MPH in one run. Derek was the rider when Terry Klemm set the record in 1100R a few years ago, and now as a driver was looking for that elusive speed to take it.
