  • USTS SATURDAY'S LAKE SPRINGFIELD RESULTS

The day here in Springfield, Illinois dawned bright and sunny and stayed that way all day, and with a beautiful day for racing, the U.S. Title Series did not disappoint the many fans gathered at the lakeside.

35 Entry’s hit the water for today’s classes with many heats of deck to deck racing the whole race long. From Tim Small and Brian Payn in the 250R class, to Brain and Tom Kirts Jr. in the 500R to the siblings, Amy and Kurt Nydahl in 350H. The fans were cheering loudly as the drivers really put on a great show today B.
Todd Brinkman and his merry band of officials performed flawlessly as we were done in 3 ½ hrs. Thanks to the best official crew in the business. Of course I am biased, did you think I would say anything else???

The day kicked off with 7 250R’s hitting the water with Tim Small and Brian Payn trading heat wins in the first two heats and then Tim Small prevailed in the final, as he got a great start on the inside and took the lead at the get go as Brian picked up another 2nd place finish with Paulie Bosnich, picking up the 3rd spot.

Next up was 350H with 6 of them hitting the first turn with Gary Buskirk and Ike Yoder the only two legal boats as Kurt Nydahl hit a buoy, no one knew who did it, but the great young man he is talked to Todd and told him he was the one. Nice job Kelly and Pete, thank you.

Gary finished out front of Ike for the 400 points. In the second heat Kurtis was absolutely driven to get around his sister Amy and bided his time until able to do so and took the win with Amy 2nd and Gary Buskirk taking 3rd. So the final heat comes up and Kurt again went to the front with Amy close in behind him and Buskirk being harassed by Ike Yoder for the 3rd spot which Ike eventually took home and Gary 4th, which when you added Gary’s points, 794 points to Kurt’s 800 points for the two heat wins. Shows that you never give up, nor lose sight of the goal.

7-125 Hydros came out to do battle with David Tenny taking the first heat, and that unfortunately was the highlight of his day as he had two heats with DNF, with the motor going away in the last corner of the last lap, and then did not start the 3rd heat. Young Jake Quesse of Depue put together two firsts and a second to take the title home to Depue. Jon Wienandt put together a 1st and 6th to take the 2nd spot, and had a chance to win it over all, but the carburetor ended up on the floor board in the 2nd heat. Steve Nissen of Ladd, Illinois, put a great finish together for his first race with us this year and finished 3rd overall.

Brianna Payn, Brian’s daughter and Parker Thirlby, Mike’s Son, put on a great show along with Lyndsy McGrath in this class as Brianna and Parker traded heat wins to set up a great race tomorrow for the 2 final heats. Brianna won the first heat going away, but Parker came back with a perfect start, got on the inside of Brianna at the start and held her off with some maneuvers of a wily veterans even though he is only 15, but great job of holding Brianna off.

500 R had 8 boats in a stellar first heat, with 3 boats jumping the gun and giving the win to Tom Kirts of the famous Kirts clan, with Kurtis Nydahl, driving one of the Thirlby Automotive entries, and the venerable Pete Voss placing 3rd. Andrew Thirlby, Derek Gesler, and Marcus Johnson all jumped the gun. The 2nd heat Brian Payn jumped out front after working his way from 4th to the top spot as they finished a great heat of racing with Andrew holding back at the start finished 2nd, and Tom Kirts a third. Now Brian had finished 4th in the first heat and had work to do to catch Tom Kirts with a 1st and 3rd as they headed to the 3rd and final heat.

Andrew Thirlby who won the 500 and 700R titles at Kingston, wanted everyone here to know the kind of speed he can carry and wiped the 3rd heat as a Thirlby owned win. Brian Payn, driving the Wright Roofing entry, knew he had to finish in front of Kirts for the overall win and did just that with a second and Tom finishing 3rd.

The 500H was cancelled as one of the 4 did not start and Tom Adkins broke during the 3 Minute gun time frame.

Again the Title Series thanks Lake Springfield Marina and Bud our sponsor’s for the weekend. Also want to give a shoutout to our safety crew from the Fire Dept. As when asked did you have a good race, yes, everyone returned to their motorhome, tent, or hotel, that constitutes a great race.
