The first race of the 2015 USTS met mother nature and gave a pretty good accounting of herself with wind causing us to not finish all of our heats of racing. We were able to finish off 2 classes yesterday and 4 today.
First things first, we are concerned for our Referee, Bill Kurps as he was taken to the hospital on Friday afternoon, and spent a couple of nights in the Winter Haven medical facility. He was released today and will follow up with Drs. At home. Get well soon Bill, we want you back at our side.We
Our thanks to the Lake Alfred Lions Club with Maggy the President and Steve Fawcett’s band of merry makers for a great effort on our behalf. We so much to put a good show on, but with very heavy winds all weekend it made for a tough weekend.
In 250R Tim Small fought his way to the front in the first het with Brian Payn leading but suffering some engine issues with a spark plug not completely connected. However Tim then suffered an equal fate burning a piston in the next heat and loosing the turning fin on top of everything else. In the third heat, Brian took over the run and finished out front with Tim finishing one position too far back to take the overall as Brian won by a scant 5 points. JP Jedwabny did a wonderful job to tke the 3rd spot in one of Tim Small’s green rocket.
Wonderful to see Rich Krier with us this weekend and thanks to Brian Payn and Rich’s crew for making the trip to Lake Alfred after the loss of his beloved Bev. This is where the love is at. The wind was not too kind to him in for the sssssvery first time in a long time, Rich blew over on the backstretch in the first heat. Pounded around a bit, but none the worse for wear, he came back and ran the third heat.
In 350H, the NCM combo of Amy and Kurt Nydahl, with Pop Pete wrenching put on one heck of a show. Side by side racing for lap after lap, with Amy eking out the win in the first heat, same racing in the 2nc heat, but Kurt caught a great start and finished out front. So the third heat was all about who could get out front and that turned out to be Amy for the win. Ike Yoder doing a great steady drive finished in the third spot.
We ran one heat of 500R with RC. Hawie taking the win over Pete Voss which was important to Pete as he picked up 300 points. The wind was so bad we called it a day after tht heat with whie cps on the water.
The Pastors of the churches in Lake Alfred gave us special dispensation and allowed us to start at 9AM on Sundaty. We want to thank them for that understanding. However we ran into the wind by about 11AM and called it a day.
Before it was all over, McKenzie Hellsten continuing the family tradition won K-Pro with that being also her first win and Dad Chris did the obligatory duty and McKenzie promptly went for a bath. It was great to have Emily Hutchison with us in her firt USTS race and she finished 2nd with Parker Thirlby 3rd.
The second heat of the 500R was run with K Nydahl taking the heat and the overall win as yesterdays winner RC Hawie jumped the gun with Pete Voss finish second and with enough points to finish out front, Kurt finishing second and RC finishing third.
In 125H David Jones put on a great show taking the win over his trailermate David Tenny, pushing Jones to the end with Jones taking the win. In the second heat David Jones went to the first turn and jumped a wave which pushed him inside the turn bouy and he had to back around which cost him dearly. Tenny taking advantage went on to the win and Jonesy finishing 2nd, with Pete Kelly finishing third.
500H was the last class to run and Jimmy Wright showed he was going to be force to reckoned with that new Rossi on the back end of the boat. He finished out front with Ike Yoder finishing 2nd with the others having issues.
Again my thanks to Gary Levin and Bill Hosler for their work with Race for Kids and their support of us in the USTS. Thank you Gentlemen.
Also want to thank Steve and David Fawcett for all the hard work they put into this weekend. Steve was running on just 4 hours of sleep today, but was a force to behold. Thanks S
Steve.
