  • USTS Quake on the Lake in Johnson City Saturday

The day dawned cold and rainy and never changed it's stripes all day except the rain let up, but remained cold and breezy. But, the racing was hot and that is all you can ask for when you get to a boat race. Despite the cold and early rain, a very good crowd braved the weather and enjoyed a full day of racing.

The only incident of a driver hitting the water was Bryan Payn driving the Pat and Jim Wright entry N-611 came into the first turn and coming out hit a roller the chine dug in and barrel rolled it. Bryan was okay and the fans were appreciative and a round of applause erupted when we got word he was okay. I commented that he would not be eligible for the re-run, but knowing Pat, Jim, and Bryan, I said in some cases if that boat was not hurt, they would try for the third heat, low and behold the heat came up and the audience rose to their feet, pointing at that blue rocket and enjoying the fact that he was out front for most of the heat until passed and finishing second. Great job guys.
250R came up first and Tim Small and Paul Bosnich each had a heat win, but Paulie could not finish the 1st heat so Tim was ahead comfortably for the overall win going into the 3rd heat, but Paulie and JP Jedwabny were not going to make it easy. As the 3rd heat started, JP got out front and was headed for a heat win which could have given him the win overall, but it was not to be, as he came into the bottom corner and spun it, but was able to keep it running for a 3rd place finish in the heat. Paulie got out front in the heat at that point and took the 2nd win in the 3 set format. Tim Small on the other hand could see it slipping away as he had engine trouble the whole heat, but carefully nursed it home to a fourth place and the overall win.

350H provided a lesson in good starts and good racing to finish 3 straight heats out front. We had started with 7 but when it ended up, Ike Yoder for a steady second place finish and Gary Buskirk for third chased Neil home. Michael W. Schmidt won an elimination heat, but could not keep it running, but what a beautiful and ultra fast brand new boat he has built for himself. Neil was perfect in his starts and finishes.

    Buskirk

12 125H's came up next and we could only run 8 on the water at any given time so 2 6 boat heats were run to get to the top 8. David Tenney and David Jones were 127 points apart for the USTS season high point championship and had trailered together to Johnson City, so an interesting trip home is in store. Jones struggled in the three heats with pipe issues, slipped, broken, and not fast, Tenney finishing 2nd took home the USTS title, Congrats Mr. Tenney.

Pete Kelly driving to victory in two heats and finishing 4th in the last heat took home the title as Tenney and John Wiendandt took a tie to the stop watches to finish with Tenney on time took the 2nd spot.

500R came up with a strange name on the page as a driver in 500R. Some young man named Kurt Nydahl was at wheel of the Thirlby Automotive M-47 instead of the familiar Mike Thirlby. Wow, did I miss something or what. Well in talking to Mike, with everything else in his life with Parker and Andrew, his two Son's, Mike decided to concentrate on the 700R this weekend and called Kurt to offer him a shot. Kurt took the bait and went out in the first heat, came in, was not sure, Mike said, awe try it again, Kurt went out and finished two of the three heats with wins, but the first heat was not able to finish and gave the overall title to Andrew with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, in each heat. Bryan Payn as indicated finished the 3rd heat after taking the flyer in the 2nd heat, to finish on the podium

    Thirlby
    Nydahl
    Payn

500H came up as the last race of the day and can you say Ike Yoder 3 times in a row, why yes I did. Ike had the H-4 on auto pilot as he had the lead from the front to the back in all three heats over Doug Hall and Tom Adkins for the podium finishes.

My thanks to Ben Thompson who did a great job of filling in for Todd who took a tumble on his hip and needed some Dr. Strangelove for a bit, but glad to see him back at the beach at the end of the day.

Sue, Denise, and crew, you are the best, thanks so much for all you do.

More probably on Monday for tomorrow, GOOD NIGHT!!!!!
