    Friday's USTS Nationals at Depue

Friday was definetly Depue weather in the middle of Sept, not July 26th. Day dawned rainy and windy, the rain subsided, but the wind stayed with us for a good part of the day, but no one took a bath as everyone used their head, but what a day of firsts, first USTS National Championships, first time winners, and first first time winners.

In the first class of the day, the OSY 400's hit the water with Bob Cronin taking the win in the first heat as Braxton Miller taking a head of steam into the bottom turn trying to get inside Bob, but as Braxton climbed Bob's roostertail, he lost a spark plug wire and finished in the 5th spot limping home. Layton Owen also one of the Oklahoma kids finished second to Bob. 2nd heat Braxton Miller finished out front with Cronin finishing in the 4th posiiton with Layton Ownes finishing second to the winner in both heats. The 3rd heat was all about the start and Layton Owen with a great start, finished out front to take home the very first USTS National Championship in 2013. Layton was not without a heart stopper on the front stretch while leading at it about 70 degrees, nose up coming down the front straightaway, and the fans could be heard oohing and ahying as he got it back on the water for the win. Layton's win was no gimmie as he won from the start to the finish. Len Miller the crew chief for the What's up Doc team has done a great service to Layton and Trent Baugh in getting them started in racing and has helped these young men be able to race. Thanks Doc for coming and Congrats!

Next up was the 5th championship for JJ Walls as he took home the CRH champtionship after Justin Gibson took home the first heat, JJ put to wins back to back to go with his 2nd place finish in the first heat to run the table for the win. Justin working hard had the 123 finish in the heats to take second, while Duke Johnson with a great run finished on the podium for the 3rd spot.

Who says you have be going 100+ miph to get the fans excited????? The K-Pro's were unbelievable in the presentation they made to a great Friday crowd at Depue. Going to the 3rd and final heat Jackson Hall, Doug Hall's son, in his first race of his career led the points going into the 3rd heat. Brianna Payn was second in points as the third heat came about. Brandon Mills who had his engine die in the first heat came out and won the second, so the third heat was in the air as to who was going to take it all home. We are talking 3 first time drivers, all rookies, but what a show they put on. Jackson found himself out front with the title looming at the end of the heat. Brianna Payn started toward the back of the pack, but began to pick the off one by one with fantastic turns in each corner and some speed on the straights. As she began to close in on Jackson, Brandon Mills was showing speed as well. Brianna caught Jackson in a corner and used her 3 previous race experience to out manuver Jackson in the corner and slammed the door shut to take home a win on Grandpa Terry Payn's birthday. The crowd was going nuts as Brianna was making her way throught the field with two youngsters with great pedigrees vying for the win. In the end Brianna took home the title in K-Pro, but with a great deal of fun for the audiance as they cheered these youngsters, like they were going 100+ and they let these youngsters know how much they appreciated their efforts with wild cheering when it was over.

Next up was 125R with Tim Small taking the first two heats in fine fashion with Jay Anderson and David Jones fighting it out as Paul Bosnich found himself somewhat off the pace in the Prop Rider entry. Tim won the two heats convincingly over the field as he got out front in the Ed Provini entry number 5 to set up a sweep. But, Paul Bosnich would have none of that and took home the 3rd heat to Tim and David Jones to put his stamp on this class as well.

After the break a spiritedbattlei n the first heat of 700R between Jared Gryskiewicz and Mike Thirlby became immediate and interesting as they were tong and nail for the first 3 laps, but Jared slowly but surely began to pull the lead in his very first heat of racing this year. Pete Voss put a nice run together to finish 3rd in that heat with Derek Gesler finishing 3rd. Second heat was all Derek as he got out front and never was headed and Jared finished in the second positin with Thirlby 3rd. In the 3rd heat Derek went dead in the water, sorry DRU, and Mike Thirlby put a win in the column, with Jared second and Derek finishing 3rd. With a thousand points in the bank, Jared won the title overall

CSR came up next with JJ Walls, trying for a 6th National Title this year, but went for naught as his kill switch was not working and they could not get started in the first heat, but Jack Campbell surely did and won the first heat and held on to two seconds behind Walls in the other two heats to take the title in a great run for Jack as he was unable to finish and start a couple of heats of the CRH category. Kyle Deptula in the Duke Johnson gentry, finished on the podium with a fine driving job to finish 3rd over all.

The last class of the day having trouble in the first heat with David Hooten conging out in the first turn, necessitated a restart with Sean McKean saying catch me if you can and no one could in the first heat, Sean way out fornt for the win, with Doug Hall finishing 3rd behind Rick Saver in 2nd. The 2nd heat Sean again out front, but blew it up in the bottom turn and did not return to the field for the 3rd heat with Doug Hall taking the win over Saver in the 2nd heat with Tom Adkins for 3rd. The 3rd and final heat, found Saver with a great start and Doug struggling with the new boat a bit in the back of the pack. Saver looked to be able to hold everyone off, until it loaded up in the first turn with a great lead on everyone, only to watch it evaporate in one backstretch. Doug and field got by him for the win in the3rd heat and Rick could only wonder. Tom Adkins driving a great race over all finished in the 3rd spot

Sounds like some exciting racing to see.
Thrilled to hear Doug Hall get a win with the new boat. The boat was built in the two weeks prior to Constantine and Depue was the first time on the water.
