Would like to read Tim's article but....
my internet security software (Avast) is denying me access to the USTS site, not only from this link, but also directly, and saying there is "malware" on the site that may compromise my computer, and access to secure sites I use such as online banking, etc.
Not enough of a geek to make a decision about whether trying to go around my security is wise, but I think I will play it safe and wait. Hopefully who ever maintains the USTS site could check??

Wild US Title Series Action in Winona, MN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stop number 2 on the 2011 USTS tour brought us to beautiful Winona Minnesota for the annual Steamboat Days Regatta. A somewhat different schedule featuring Friday night and Saturday racing had teams arriving on Wednesday for Thursdays first of two full days of testing. Three of the premeir classes, 1100 hydro, 350 runabout and 250 hydro were featured on Friday evening, and they didnt disappoint the large crowd gathered around the lakes edge.
Kicking things off were the 1100 TOP HYDROS. Ten capsule boats took the water for heat one. Jim Wright brought out the red flag after flipping in the first turn, and had to sit out the restart.Doug Hall nailed the start and took the heat win over a pesky Jim Kirts. Jim continued with steady finishes in heats two and three for the overall title with Gary Buskirk driving the Thirlby rig and Doug Hall rounding out the top three.
Ten 350 runabouts answered the call for heat one, with 8 of the ten hitting a perfect start heading to turn one. Tim Small got there first to get the win over Mike Krier and Brian Payn. Heat two had Small out front again only to have the heat stopped by the scary crash between Rich Krier and Jared Gryskiewicz. Thankfully no one was hurt, but Rich was done for the day with a badly damaged boat. On the restart, Small jumped out front with Payn and Mike Krier in hot pursuit. Thats how they finished, followed closely by the rest of the pack. After 3 wild heats, Tim took the overall with Mike second and Brian third.
The last class of the evening had the 250 hydros doing battle. Amy Nydahl jumped out front in heat one and was never headed as she cruised to the heat win. Wil Tetro came from the back to take the runnerup spot followed by Ben Thompson in the beautiful TBR racing hydro. Heat two saw Ben hit a perfect start to go wire to wire for the win and set up an exciting final between Nydahl, Tetro, and Thompson. Wil got the jump and the win in heat 3, but it wasnt enough to take the overall, as Amy only needed a third to get the top spot followed by Tetro and Thompson.
Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny with a full day of racing with 7 classes on the schedule. After a brief test session and drivers meeting we were sittin on ready. 125 hydro opened the show, and had some of the days closest racing. Wil Tetro not only had the 250 running well, but also the 125 as he took 2 heat wins to go along with a second in the final heat to claim the overall title. David Tenney and Amy Nydahl gave chase with Tenney winning heat 3 to get the bronze, and Nydahl the silver.
250 runabout was a three heat shootout between Tim Small, Mike Krier, and Brian Payn. Tim took a heat win, but had a unit let go in heat 2. Brian won a heat but had a pipe break in heat 3. This left Mike with a final heat win to go along with a second and a third to take the overall win with Tim and Brian having to settle for the silver and Bronze.
125 runabout had Dave Jones making it two in a row following a season opening win in Menomonie. Andrew Thirlby ran steady all day to take the second place podium spot followed by Paulie Bosnich in third. Paulie had the speed all three heats, but just didnt have the luck to go with it.
350 hydro continues to be the Jeff Kugler show as Jeff swept all 3 heats for a perfect 1200 points.Mark Stahl, Ike Yoder and Gary Buskirk all gave it their best, but couldnt match the speed of Kugler. Yoder got the silver with his usual consistant finishes, and Buskirk rounded out the top three.
The 500 runabouts again had a large field of boats and some surprises as well. Brian Payn had the Pat Wright entry running well and took 2 heat wins. Last years two top dogs, Mike Thirlby and Jared Gryskiewicz continued to have troubles although Mike got it together in time to win heat 3. One of our new 500 drivers Brennen Burkland did the family proud with a second place overall finish, followed by the ever steady Pete Voss in the third spot.
Ralph Donald took home the 175 crown after the gremlins seemed to bite most of the field. Kugler racing teamate Brad Greenslaugh took the silver after winning the season opener.
Vinnie Buskirk got the win in K-pro over Bailey Burkland as only two of our future stars answered the gun for heat one. Lets hope for a better turnout at future events. 500 hydro closed the show as Shawn Mckean and Doug Hall blistered the course with amazing speeds. Shawn wasnt to be denied on this day as he won 2 of the 3 heats to take the win. Ike yoder bided his time as usual to get the silver, and Brianna Johnson in the beautiful black and red revolution entry got her first podium spot in a capsule hydro.
We would again like to thank our great crew of officals for an outstanding job as always. Sue and her crew on the judges stand, Ray Rodda the voice of the USTS, Fred Schletty our referee, Todd Brinkman our race director, Big PAL for running the pits, and last but not least Pete Gryskiewicz the man who puts this all together.
Next stop is SPEED WEEK 2011 - Constantine Michigan, followed by the APBA PRO NATIONALS in Depue Illnois.
