  • Saturday Hartford results

Earl decided to leave town last night, but left a windy but sunny day in its wake. The river is well protected in the valley with large buildings on the west side and tall embankments on both sides, which lead to very raceable water.

    39 entries started the day including 12-125H, 8 500R, 6-350H, 5-K-Pro,
    4-250R, and 4-500H's.

The day gave us 2 first time winners, who by tradition went in the tank after the wins. Congratulations to JP Jedwabny and Brenden Vishoot, both first time winners, JP in 250R and Brenden in 125H. Great job guys.

250R started with a heat win for Tim Small and JP finishing 2nd, they reversed that in the next heat, and then JP got Tim right at the exit pin in the third and final heat for the win. I do not think in the 3 heats that either one of them finished more than 2 boat lengths in front of the other.

Paulie Bosnich was sorting through some engine issues, but the 2010 National Champ in this class finished 3rd overall.

    JP
    Tim Small
    Paulie Boshnich

350H had two of the three incidents for the day. In the first heat, Mike Schmidt, the younger, tried to fly over the tree line along the bank and did a complete 360 flip, staying in the boat until it slammed bottom first on the water. Mike was okay except for a cut hand, but found a way to come back in the third heat.

In the third heat, Gary Buskirk coming up the inside on the backstretch, dove into the corner and stuffed it. The boat stopped on a dime, Gary, oh about a buck and half. I told him I could only give his cartwheeling Pirouette a 9.5 as he was un-able to keep his legs together doing a double cartwheel. Gary was okay, but the boat suffered some damage.

The 2010 champ took a slug of water in the second heat and bent the rods and was unable to run the third heat after scorching everyone in the first heat. Mike Schmidt, the elder did a great job and finished out front.

Mark Stahl sewed up the USTS point championship with a 2nd place finish and gave the J&S trailer a great day!!!

Dan Kirts has kept his hand in boat racing as he has helped Ike Yoder keep those Konig running and Ike by winning the 3rd heat finished 3rd overall

    Mike Schmidt
    Mark Stahl
    Ike Yoder

The race of the day was the 3rd heat of 500R with Jared Gryskiewicz, 2009-10 National Champ having traded heat wins with a resurgent Jay Anderson, found himself trailing RC Howie and Jay as they were on the backstretch in the final heat. Jared reaching for the deep, pulled alongside Jay and then pulled ahead for the point win. Jared and Jay traded places at least 3 times in the final heat and the crowd, as they say, was going wild. Great racing in all three, but mark down the 3rd heat as one of those that you will remember.

It was great to see RC back in the same boat he nearly destroyed at the worlds in 2008, and to take the third heat convincingly was fun to watch.

    Jared
    Jay
    RC

    K-Pro
Wendy Eldredge, and related by sharing a great grandfather, Peter Crowley, traded heat wins, before Peter was able to put it away in the 3rd, although i wondered if he was going to finish as he almost dumped it twice in the 3rd heat, but pulled out the win.

Vinny Buskirk, improving with each race, finished a solid 3rd and was very competitive, congrats Vinny!

    Peter
    Wendy
    Vinny

125H started with 12 boats, 4 too many for the course, so we split them into 2 heats of 6 each and 8 for the final.

Amy Nydahl is just amazing in the 125 hydro and won her first heat with Brenden Vishoot winning the other first heat. David Jones won a second heat and Brendon finished second in that heat. Kristi Ellison had a great day and finished on the podium. Amy came into the final with no finish in heat two and then unfortunately loaded up for the 3rd heat and it doomed her to finish off the mark. Half the field jumped the gun in the 3rd and final heat and Brendon Vishoot hit the start right on the money and finished out front with an overall win.

Shawn Cavanaugh finished 4th, but you can say he won the day as he did a spectacular stand it straight up and I mean perpendicular, but somehow got it back on the water and kept it running. Great job Shawn.

    Brendon
    Kristi
    David Jones

The final class 500H was all Ike Yoder as sewed up the 500H USTS point championship. He won all three heats as Chris Hellsten, driving for Thirlby Automotive, as Brandon was in Illinois with his UMP car, was able to get by Jim Wright at the end of the 3rd heat to take second. BTW, Brandon won a feature up at I-96 speedway the other night. We miss ya!

    Ike Yoder
    Chris Hellsten
    Jim Wright

Tomorrow is supposed to be a great day for racing and we look forward to it. Will not be able to post result for tomorrow until Monday evening some time as we will head for Indy right after the last heat.

        K-pro is.....

        K(ids) P(rofessional) R(acing) O(utboards)

It is an OMC A Stock motor on a hydro with transom height restriction for spin out prevention, but no restrictor plate or other mechanism to keep the motor from developing its maximum HP. There is a minimum and maximum age limit. It is the PRO Category's starter class for young kids.

            Over/under

Thanks for the great updates Ray. With three incidents on the day , I can only assume that means at least 4 of the signature " HOLY BUCKETS " came out. I wish I could have seen the 8 500 runabouts on a tight course. Did Jared end up with the season points championship with his win?

So what was like the old Pro J class (if I remember correctly).

QUOTE "like the old PRO J Class?"

Yes, very similar, serving the same purpose. If I remember correctly APBA tried to put the PRO J class under the "J Class" umbrella, PRO Category did not want this and K-PRO was the answer to keep from having to run the class under the J Class rules that are made by an separate management board/commission of APBA, and not the individual category commissions.

In other words, stay out of the day to day running/classes of the PRO Category by APBA, or at least that is what I remember and understand. That may be missing some of the finer points, but was the general idea and purpose.

I didnt think is was possible to to go that fast on water. G-55 is a rocket ship in 500. I believe Mike Shmidt jr won 250H today. (5) 700 hydros ...T-4 Won the first heats.

                          Sunday Hartford Results

This is going to be somewhat from memory as the Dufus lost the results. Sue if I get them wrong, hit me at Fl, but make sure we are close.

Many thanks need to be given to a whole host of folks, I know I will forget someone, but please forgive. First thanks to the Recapture folks. Charlie Meyer was everwhere and was of great help. Joe Marfuggi, the President was able to give us a great deal of info on what they are doing up there and the Title Series is greatful to have been a part of their plans for the riverfront. What a great event!

My thanks to Sue and her crew who all year have been urbelievably efficient and of great help to the drivers and to me. Todd, what can I say, except, "okay Ray let's getem going." And thank you for that!..... Paulie, Fred, Nic, how about this season, one of the best!

Alright, lets see where this goes.

                          125R
In over 40 years as a driver, spectator, and announcer I thought I had seen it all, but as the saying goes, "You ain't seen nuttin yet." In the first heat Travis Ellison got a great start and was never headed for the 4 laps.

The second heat was a doozy. Travis broke before the one minute gun, Andrew Thirlby was having trouble and stopped, Paulie Bosnich blew the bottom of V-99 out and with one more lap to go David Jones, driving the David Tenny entry stopped just past the finish line, unfortunately for him, it was on lap 3, so we had no finishers in the 2nd heat.

David and Andrew answered the call in third heat, only to have Andrew with trouble again, and David was able to finish this time, with just the two boats able to go.

Travis though won it on time for his first win in the 125R class.

                          Travis
                          David
                          Paulie

                          250H
8 boats started the heats with lots of pushing and shoving, but great racing. Michael W. Schmidt(the younger as I call him), after a spectacular flip on Saturday came and played it out to the end with a win.
Brad Barth has not been able to make all of our races this year, but boy did he leave us with something to think about, he scored victories in the 2nd and 3rd heat, but got trapped in the back at the start and finished with a 4th, which allowd Michael to eek out a well deserved win.

Scary incident as Ben Thompson stopped in the bottom turn with a whole host of boats headed down the bacstretch. Ben standing in the boat with arms up, saw boats going inside and outside with spray hiding Ben from JP Jedwabny. JP was able to see him at the last minute took evasive action, but clipped Ben's boat as Ben took the ole dive off the ship. All were okay and I know JP was pretty heavy hearted, but he did what he could to avoid Ben and all ended well. Ben says he is going to have to put the 4th sideboard on the boat since he and Nic finished it last winter.

                          Michael W. Schmidt NAC
                          Brad Barth
                          Chris Hellesten

                          350R
Well Jay Anderson is one to never give up as he had a heated battle with Jared Gryskiewicz in the 500R, turned around Sunday and was in the battle for the 350R NAC crown, as he battled Mark Stahl,Tim Small, Jared, and Brian Payn.

Jay won the first heat and Payn got a bad start in the 1st heat and battled all the way to the end passing the 2nd place boat right at the end. Brian then went out and won the next two heats for the overall win.

                          Brian
Mark Stahl apolgoize on the first go round
                          Jay

                          175H
Ralph is Ralph right? Well he not only won this years Nationals, he finished off this season Title Series race with another. We had nine 175H that started and it was a donny brook, with 3 gun jumpers all in the first three places in the first heat with Ralph hitting the starting line on the mark.

                          Ralph
                          Michael W. Schmidt
Diane Murray. (Diane's outfit is going to be for sale right after the Worlds.

                          700H
Sean Mckean continued to show the speed that he has had all year. After a dismal Saturday Sean was at it Sunday for sure. He won 2 of the 3 heats, although out front in the second he ended up picking of the entry bouy in turn one and was DQ'd.

Jim Wright gave himself and early Birthday present, Jimmy's B-day is today, as he won overall in the 700, with Gary Buskirk driving a Thirlby Automotive entry finished 3rd. Jim has been running better and better at each race and it all came together for him at Hartford.

You could not have asked for a better weekend of racing and acceptance by the crowd. Saturday's estimate was 7-8K and Sundays was double that.

The Town of East Hartford, and the City of Hartford's police and fire teams were outstanding. A quick meeting each day to go over events and responsibilities was held each morning and it went off like clock work. Tim and John if you read this, THANK YOU!

I will be posting the GRM/VRP winners of these events later this week.

                          Ray
